migration records from NY to Ireland

Hello

I have found many records with immigration records to the United States but not able to locate any return back to Ireland. Any suggestions for Irish websites to locate?

I don't know the year of return for your ancestor but have you looked at Ancestry.com (World subscription) or possibly familysearch.org?  You won't find any Irish sites that would have this information.

You don’t say what years you are interested in but bear in mind that till 1922 Ireland was part of the UK, and so any travel records between the US and Ireland tend to fall into UK collections. UK arrival records only start about 1890 though. They  can be found on Ancestry.

Also, many of the ships that called in Ireland terminated elsewhere. For example,  the Titanic was booked Southampton to Cherbourg to Queenstown (now Cobh in Co Cork) and on to New York.  Many ships called at Moville in Co. Donegal before ending their journey in Glasgow. And so on. So the records may show Southampton, Liverpool or Glasgow as port of arrival  even though your ancestor got off before that.

I would need a name and approx year and maybe lucky and find then.  there are 192 names listed from America to Ireland.  just checked for England 60,717 listed names.

Margot,

Thank you for responding and I am sorry for the long delay! I am looking for a relative that died in NY in July 1903 and I believe his body may have been returned to Ireland for burial. His Name was William John McCallion. I cant find any information on burial in the US. His death was accidental and was mentioned in the newspaper - the article states that no family members lived in the US. I did find his will - his wife was Mary Ann McCallion and it mentioned he passed in Londonderry (which I am hoping means that is where he is buried?)

Sorry to say Michelle, I cannot find any information only the will information. What was his date of birth and was he born in Ireland?

I would be able to trace back and then see if I could find family.

As he passed in the USA the transfer to Ireland is different.

Find a grave only have information if a relative or keen grave viewer uploads the information.

So his date of birth and where, thanks,

Margot Secrette

Hello,

Thank you. He was born 9/1866 in Ballyloughan. I believe ( but not sure) that his wife and family were living in Magherafelt when he passed. Thanks

michellereimer

Thanks for the information.

This is William's birth record 2nd entry down.

I cannot find Edward and Isabella's marriage.

I drilled through up to 1874 no other births listed, have a look at this site.     I did see a child no name to Edward and MARY Quinn, not sure if these are related or if Mary passed and Edward re-married. Hardly any deaths are listed.

Irish Genealogy - Explore your Family History

I looked in familysearch.org just to see if any information   searched with Edward McCallion and Isabella Quinn .................... a surname like yours came up with an "n" on the end.

Missouri. Census 1930

So now back to the burial, someone local to the area on this site will help.     I do get updates so I hope you get answers.

Margot Secrette

Thank you fir all your help

I noticed this probate abstract on the PRONI wills site:

Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Edward Joseph M'Callion late of Cough County Tyrone Merchant who died 26 April 1889 at same place were granted at Armagh to Edward M'Callion of Ballyloughan County Londonderry Farmer the Father.

Edward McCallion senior died at Ballyloughan on 13.1.1892. Informant was his son William of Coagh. Edward's wife was still alive at the time of his death but then sadly died a few hours later on the same day. Hers is the next entry in the death register.

No McCallion farm in Ballyloughan by the time of the 1901 census.

Ballyloughan is in Desertcreight RC parish (Derryloran civil parish) and so the McCallion family may have a burial there. Catholics in the 1800s rarely kept burial records but there might be a gravestone (more likely for a farming family like this). Graveyards in that parish include: Gortalowry, Derryloughan Old & Cookstown. You could contact the Desertcreight parish office to see if anyone has transcribed the gravestones there.
