Michael O'Connell and Bridget Dorgan

Cork

Hello,

I'm looking for information on Michael O'Connell who was married to Bridget Dorgan. Michael and Bridget had at least 8 children. Michael's parents may have been Denis O'Connell and Mary Harnett but I haven't been able to confirm that. I have not been able to find a marriage record for Michael and Bridget but I have found birth records for their 8 children. The children were born and baptized in Shandrum, Cork, Ireland between 1861 and 1875.

Michael may have had a younger brother named Timothy. Timothy married Margaret Connell in 1881 in Shandrum, Cork, Ireland, they had 13 children together starting in 1882 and ending in 1905. Timothy's marriage record states his father's name was Denis. I have not been able to find a marriage record for Denis.

Bridget Dorgan was the daughter of Cornelius Dorgan and Eliza Williams. I have not found a marriage record for Cornelius and Eliza, the only thing I could find, besides the records for their children, was a death record for Eliza, she died in 1891, Killmallock, Charleville, Cork, Ireland.

Thank you for any help,

Mary Jo

Roots Ireland has a November 1 1855 Timothy O'Connell baptismal record in Shandrum with father Denis O'Connell and mother Mary Hartnett. Sponsors Richard O'Connell and Honora Hartnett. There is a also a Mary Hartnett baptismal record June 6 1852 same parents in Shandrum RC church sponsors John Hurley and Mary Connell.

Like you, I did not find a baptismal record for Michael or marriages for Denis and Mary or Cornelius and Eliza.

If you have not done so already, you may want to scan the Shandrum parish register to see if you can locate Michael's baptismal record which may have been missed in transcription by Roots Ireland. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0095

Hello Roger,

Thank you very much for your help. I will certainly look at the record book.

Would you be able to see if you can find anything about Richard O'Connell? My connection to these two families seems to be more ways than one. Cornelius and Eliza Dorgan are my 3x's great-grandparents but somehow I'm also related to descendants of Timothy and Margaret O'Connell, and to make matters more intriguing, the shared matches I have on Ancestry to Timothy and Margaret's descendants are my cousins who descend from Michael and Bridget O'Connell.

Take care, and stay safe,

Mary Jo

PS Can you see if you can find a marriage record for Bridget Dorgan and Michael O'Connell? I haven't been able to find one for them.

Thank you,

Mary Jo

Mary Jo:

I was not able to find a marriage record for Michael O'Connell and Bridget Dorgan.

The only Richard O'Connell/Connell record I could find in Shandrum was:  Richard Connell baptized December 23 1838 father Denis Connell mother Margaret Lynch

Thank you.

Now that I'm a little more familiar with the https://registers.nli.ie site I'll check out some of the other parishes in that area to see if I can find my ancestors. One question I have, for now, is there any way to search by name, or do you have to go page by page?

Mary Jo:

Unfortunately, page by page. Many of the registers are in Latin (particularly in the first part of the 19th century), some are faint and/or illegible. Requires a lot of patience.
