Michael Keane
I have just published a new local history book
Book Title: Family stories from Cork history
Author: Dr, Michael Keane (ex-University College, Cork)’
Summary: The book features nine Cork families who achieved distinction and in some cases notoriety in different historic eras; Pikes, Hawkes, Penroses, Warrens, MacCarthys, O’Driscolls, O’Mahonys, Earls of Castlehaven and Crosbies.
The stories include the background to multiple burnings of Big Houses during the War of Independence. At an earlier time, the historic loss to English invaders during the turbulent 17th century of the vast clan territories of the MacCarthys Lords of Muskerry, along with the O’Driscolls and O’Mahonys of West Cork, is explored.
Some of the tales are more personal, including stories of marital infidelity with profound family consequences, along with major frauds involving both banking and mining.
Some aspects of Cork archaeology are also discussed, including the controversial removal of historic Ogham stones from two neighbouring Cork farms for display in University College Cork and the British Museum in London. Also, an example is provided to show how modern solar farming and an area of concentrated archaeological features make uncomfortable bedfellows.
Bio: This is Michael Keane’s fourth local history book. His three earlier book titles are as follows:
The Crosbies of Cork, Kerry, Laois and Leinster (2021)
The Earls of Castlehaven of Cork and Kildare (2018)
From Laois to Kerry (2016)
Book availability: The books are available in a range of local bookshops and are also on Amazon.
