Michael Hickey and Margaret Tracey Hickey, Drom, Co. Tipperary

Hello, i am searching for the birth record and marriage or other information regarding the Michael Hickey family who were in Cashel and Emly, Drom and Inch in 1831. I found their daughter Eliza,s birth 8?, Eliza 1831, Thomas 1836, Michael 1833 and maybe an Ann in 1832. I am looking for any information about this family. I believe the father Michael died before this family came to America. They settled in Greenbush, Rensselaer County, New York. I believe they came over in 1848 as the 1855 NY state census states they have been in America 7 years. We will be making a trip to Ireland in the next year or so and would like to get to the church, cemetery, homestead etc of this family. If anyone has any information or suggestions as to how I can further proceed, please letme know. Many Thanks, Kathy B.D.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked Roots Ireland and the couple was married in 1824 in the Templemore RC church. See transcription below. Michael was from Drom and Margaret from Templemore. They had at least nine children who were baptized in Drom and Inch: John 1825 Anne 1827 James 1828 Martin 1830 Elizabeth 1831 Michael 1833 Mary 1834 Thomas 1836 Margaret 1838. You may want to get a short-term subscription to Roots to view the transcriptions of the baptisms.

There are no civil records of deaths prior to 1864 so we can't tell the exact year when Michael died.

Roger, thank you so much for this quick and informative response! And, I am reading it on the anniversary date of my great great great grandparents wedding day! How cool! I will be sure to subscribe to roots Ireland to further this quest.  Are they part of ancestry.com? I already have the worldwide subscription for that.  Also, finding Michael Hickey's death records, do the churches in Ireland have records that far back? I have had pretty good luck with churches here in NY.

Again, many thanks,

Kathy

Kathy:

Roots Ireland is separate from Ancestry. However, many of the Irish church records are on Ancestry World so I would search on Ancestry first before considering a Roots subscription.

Roger and Kathy:

I'm so happy to have found this post.  You may have given me a lead to where in Tipperary some of my family members were from.  In the US Federal Census for Troy, N.Y. which is adjacent to Greenbush in Rensselaer County, James Hickey, 21, from Ireland was living in the same household with my gg-grandparents, Patrick Corbit, 30,  laborer in a stone quarry, and his wife, Margaret Corbit nee Donohoe, 30, Patrick Donohoe, 35, Michael Shinners, 19, Margaret Gleason, 17, Martin Gleason, 6, and the Corbit children: Hanora, 9, John, 3, Julia A., 1, and Margaret J. 2/12.  With the exception of the Corbit children, everyone was born in Ireland.  According to the naturalizaton records, the Corbits were from Tipperary.

Address of my Ancestry tree with the Corbit family in case you'd like to review it:       https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/68758550/person/301856…

My family members are DNA matches to the descendants of Patrick Tracey from Tipperary and his wife Ann Tracey nee Corbit.  In the 1850 U.S. Census for Troy, N.Y., Ann Gleason, 9, was living with Patrick Tracey, 25, carpenter, his wife, Ann, 22, and their children: Bridget, 2, and Hanora, 9/12.

I've always wondered whether James Hickey, Michael Shinners and the Gleason children were relatives to the Corbits or to the Traceys or to both.

Would you suggest that I review Drom and Templemore records?

Thank you for any pointers or help you can give me.

Joan D.

P.S.  Kathy - Have you tested your DNA with Ancestry.com?  If you have, my Tracey cousins and I should see if we are matches to you.
