Michael Foley and Julia Barry from County Cork
Cork
We are planning a visit to Ireland at the end of June and would love to visit the area in Cork where my husbands great-great grandparents came from - Michael Foley and Julia Barry. This is what we have been able to document:
- They first appear in the US census in 1850 living in Fishkill, Duchess County, NY with their 2-year old son John, who was born in NY. Michael is a 30-year old gardener who was born in Ireland. Julia is 23, also born in Ireland.
- By 1860, they are in New Lenox, Will County, Illinois. Michael is 40 and working as a farm hand. 4 of the 6 children on the census were born in NY: John 12; Michael 9; William 7; and, Margaret 5. Two children were born in Illinois: Bartholomew 3; and Walter 1.
- They are burried in Morris, Grundy County, IL with very clear birth/death dates on the headstone: Michael Foley 1818-1865; His wife Julia 1828-1904.
- A family note from their son Bartholomew in 1930 stated that both Michael and Julia were born in County Cork and came to America about the time of the potato famine or soon after, setetling in New York State along the Hudson River. They lived in NY for about 5 years then settled near Joliet and nearby Morris, IL.
- Reportedly, the couple was married in Ireland.
- A friend helping with this research several years ago stated:The Barry family appears to have originated in Meadstown, Liscleary parish, County Cork, Ireland. It is believed that Michael's father was named John and that Julia's mother was named Margaret (if they followed traditional Irish naming conventions). It is likely that the Foley family lived in a nearby town, more than likely in the Carragline parish since there were no Foleys in the Liscleary parish as of the late 1840s.I have searched the NLI parish records in this area for a 1846 marriage between Michael and Julia to no available. Her reasoning for putting them in the Meadstown area was based solely on Griffith's valuation and the presence of both the Foley and Barry families in the area.
Any help in locating where in "County Cork" they came from would be appreciated as we would love to visit!
