Michael COUGHLAN & Ellen CONNELL married 12th November 1859

My great grandmother left some information with family members in her later life.

Her parents were Michael Coughlan and & Ellen Connell.

I have found a record of their marriage In "Irish Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915 for Ellen Connell".

We were told that Ellen's parents were: Michael CONNELL & Mary WELSH.  - I cannot find any record of this couple or the parents of Michael COUGHLAN.

Michael & Ellen COUGHLAN had several children:-

Mary COUGHLAN  born 31 March 1861.  Gortnahoe, Glangoole Hill, Tipperary (my great grandmother who came out to New Zealand on the ship Hereford leaving Ireland in September 1879.

She married Conrad HAAR in New Zeland.

I have records of another child - female, no name in September 1866 who died as a baby.  District/Reg Area Urlingford

Another daughter - Johana COUGHLAN 18 January 1869

And another daughter - Bridget COUGHLAN 3rd November 1870.

Both SR District/Reg Area Urlingford  - and both records found through Irish Genealogy.

Both of these girls followed their sister out to New Zealand in 1884 on the Doric.

I am very confident that there was also a son named James W. Coughlan. - I have newspaper cuttings that were sent out to New Zealand from Nevada US in 1913 to my great grandmother.    He fell down a mine in Goldfield, Nevada and died on 7th October 1913.  I am trying to find any information at all about Mary COUGHLAN's parents, grandparents & siblings.  I cannot find a birth record for the son James.  So is it possible that there were even more children.  I have a letter written in Urlingford, Ireland on 18th October 1898 to my great grandmother  out here in New Zealand.  It is seems to be from a lady that my great grandmother may have worked for before emigrating to N.Z.  It mentions (Mary's) sisters and brothers doing well in the US - and this cannot include her other two sisters who had already come to N.Z. by that time.  This letter is signed by "??? Kate ?? Bowden.  She mentions her relatives "Ellie, James, Kattie, John, Fred".. .    So any information at all would be so much appreciated.  many thanks in advance for any suggestions etc.  Anne.

For some reason part of your message was cut off on the message board

I have checked both RootsIreland and Ancestry (paid subscription) for more children and have not found any nor a birth record for James.

I found his death record and gravesite on Ancestry. They identify Illinois as birthplace. He was single so maybe no one knew where he was born. He might have lived in Illinois before going to Nevada.

Hi Mary  - sorry for my delay in acknowledging your messages.  I didn't realise that they were waiting to be read.  I thought I may have had an email alert through the website but now I know I will keep checking.  Thank you for your research and comments.  Very surprising that she was born in N.Z.  I am surprised that anyone would have made that trip by sea from Ireland to the UK and then knowing what it was like, did a return trip..!!  I will spend sometime following up your information.

Hi to Minto also - thank you for your comment.  I am not sure if there is a connection.  My great grandmother was Mary Ann COUGLAN, born in 1861 and then travelled out to N.Z. at the age of 19 and married Conrad HAAR.
