Michael Cassidy and Ellen Dwyer

I'm trying to find any information I can on the Cassidy family in County Clare and the most information I have is on Michael and Ellen Cassidy.  Michael was a farm overseer and he married Ellen Dwyer in Ireland before sailing to Sydney, Australia on the "Charles Kerr", arriving on 8 January 1839.  As far as I can determine, Michael had at least two sisters, Mary born 1814, and Bridget (birth date unknown).  Their father was Stephen Cassidy born around 1796 who was a farmer.  Bridget is my Great Great Great Grandmother.

Ellen Dwyer is the sister of Johanna Dwyer who married Michael McCreagh.  The McCreagh's arrived in Australia in 1841 but had three children born in Ireland, Francis born around 1805 (a shoemaker), Terence (a tailor)  and Mary who died on the voyage out to Australia.

Any information on anyone listed here would be very much appreciated.

Thank you very much for that information.  Is there any way I can find out their actual birthdates?

Hi Margot

I do thank you very much for the time and effort you've taken to find this information for me but I must admit that I'm having a bit of trouble reading and understanding a lot of it.  I need to do some Irish research regarding Tithe Books for starters.

When Mary Ann O'Gorman died in NSW in Australia in 1869, her mother Bridget (Cassidy), put an advertisement in the newspapers inviting people to Mary Ann's funeral.  This implies that Bridget (the mother) was also in Australia but I'm unable to find any shipping record for her.  Is this something you are able to look into for me?  Mary Ann and her sister Bridget, departed Plymouth on the "Thomas Arbuthnot" as part of the Earl Grey Scheme on 28 October 1849, so I'm assuming her mother came out some time between 1850-1869.  Thanks.

MallyGee

On the ship record arriving in Australia 1850, It says.

Biddy Gorman age 17 from Scarriff, County Clare....Not yours.This is on Lough Derg.

Mary Gorman age 18

Biddy Gorman age 17     Both having an Uncle and Aunt,  Michael and Mary Cassidy living in George Street Sydney.

Also says..........................Father is John and Mother was Bridget....Mother Living in Ennis.

I searched for all Gorman's ship records after 1850 to 1870 and no result.

I look for deaths, Civil deaths were only registered after 1864, so sorry no result there.

I couldn't find anything in Australian records either that's why I was hoping that maybe Irish records were more complete, but it's not looking that way.  Maybe she never came to Australia after all;  I'm wondering if another relative in Australia put the message in the Newspaper on behalf of Mary Ann's mother.  I guess I'll never know!!

I do thank you so much though, for checking for me.

MallyGee

You are welcome.
