MELDRUM Family/Fermanagh

Looking to connect with MELDRUM family members who may have been in Fermanagh. Robert MELDRUM, the earliest MELDRUM I have record of was born in Feb of 1823. He emigrated to Canada around 1847 and was definitley in Canada by August of 1850 when he married Elizabeth CROWE also of Fermanagh. Although the couple married in Montreal, Quebec, Canada they lived in a small village in Ontario. I have extensive information on the couple's descendants but know nothing of Robert's background and family in Ireland. Meldrum is typically considered a Scottish name but I only information of Robert's birth in Fermanagh. One old record mentions a place called Killinaharry (sp) but have never been able to find out if such a place even exists.

Hi Marg,

Thank you very much for your message.

Meldrum is not a common name in Ireland at all so this should help you narrow down a place of origin. I did a search for it in Griffith?s Valuation. This is a property valuation that was carried out in Ireland 1848-64. The name was only recorded in 3 counties; Donegal, Tyrone and Fermanagh.

Hi there,

I also have Killinaharry in my genealogy. A genealogy written by my great aunt in the 1970s said this; "The Mormon library in Salt Lake City gives the name of Thomas Fleming... and the place of birth of Thomas as Killinaharry, so far unlocated even on ordnance maps dated 1858. It may of course have been the name of a farm or house."

I wonder if it could have been a name given to hide the actual location of their birth.

I was playing a video game called Grand Harvest Solitaire and their was a sign above one of the estates saying, Killinaharrie, I was so surprised so I googled it and only found your post. I am curious about this place. I wonder if there might be some record of it in Cavan or Monaghan libraries. When my genealogy was written there was no easy access to the libraries by Canadians (1970s).
