McMahon Family Co Tyrone

Seeking any information relating to Patrick McMahon and family.  He was tried at Enniskillen in 1830 and sentenced to transportation to Australia.  Born 1780.  In 1839 his wife Ann was granted free passage to NSW.  She was resident at Ramackin Termonaguirk.  She was born Ann Hyndes c 1798.  Their four children also travelled to Australia:  Mary born c 1821; John born c 1823; Catherine born c 1828-9 (my great great grandmother); Francis born c 1830-31. It seems likely that Mary was married at the time she emigrated - possibly to a Mr Donnelly.

Mary,

The tithe applotment records for 1825 list all those with land in Termonmaguirk (ie mostly farmers). I see a Harry Haines and a John Haines (same as Hyndes) in Ramackan. Possible relatives to Ann, perhaps. There was also a James McMaghan, so perhaps a relation to Patrick?:

There was no trace of the Hyndes (and variant spellings) family in Griffiths Valuation of 1860. However the Tyrone Constitution of 16.10.1865 reported a Thomas Hoynes who was a servant to John Caldwell of Ramackan who had been convicted in the local Magistrates court for negligence and disobedience.  He might be a relative. No Haines (or variant) in the 1901 census for Ramackan.

PRONI holds some leases in respect of Ramackan:  D3007/A/24/44 covering the years 1755-1845. I don’t know whether any include your families. You would need to get someone to look at them to find out.

Griffiths lists a John McMahon farming in Ramackan. He had a half share in plot 6 (21 acres) with Owen McMahon. Both were deleted by 1862 suggesting they had died or moved away. That family was gone from the townland by the 1901 census.

Thank you for this information Elwyn.   I have to apologise - when I first read the email I clicked on the first link and thought they were both the same - sometimes I get a lot of emails coming in and then I tend to read them in a hurry.  I have been busy the past couple of months but now taking the research up again.

*  It could be the McMahons you mentioned were related.    I have since found on a recent Ireland Reaching Out email an article about the flax grower's list and interestingly there are a couple of McMahons in the list - see screen shot.- sorry it's not letting me paste that but it is from failteronhat.com and lists two McMahons from Termonmaguirk.

*  I believe you can follow up petitions to bring the convict's family out but you need to contact Dublin for that so I will have to check that out further as it may provide more details.

*  Would there be any information re a Donnelly family?  See original post.  A cousin who did a lot of the research on the family remembered his mother/grandmother saying they were related to an Australian Prime Minister Frank Forde - during the second world war (for 8 days, deputy PM for several years.  To cut a long story short he failed to find a direct connection, but thought it was possibly Mrs Forde.  I did find, in my research a few years ago, a John Donnelly (or Donely) who seems to have been the husband of Mary McMahon.  It is likely they married in Ireland as I have not been able to find any record in our NSW BDM.

*  Ann Hyndes died aged 62 in 1860 - her son provided the information for the death certificate but listed 'unknown' for her parents and just Tyrone for her birthplace.

*  Patrick McMahon arrived in Sydney in 1831 as a convict.  Records show he was convicted for forging notes and had an alias - Mahore. He was tried at Enniskillen on 28 July 1830 and sentenced to 14 years; his year of birth was given as 1780.  His occupation butcher (and also reaps and plows).  Would there be any further information regarding him available?  He died in 1853.  He settled on a farm near Braidwood In NSW - about halfway between Canberra and the coast.

Again, my apologies for the delay in following up on your reply - appreciate your effort very much.

If you are interested you might be able to Google Francis Forde and get a result.  I just did and there are several pictures of him including the family and his wife who is called Vera, evidently a shortened version of her birth name - Veronica.   (Her parents were James O'Reilly who married Mary Donnelly/Donely whose birth was registered in Braidwood in 1864 - she was the daughter of John and Bridget Donnelly who married in 1857.  Quite possibly this John Donnelly was the son of Mary McMahon Donnelly.)

Regards

Mary

The RC marriages for Termonmaguirk start in 1837. I searched them on Ancestry but did not see any marriage for a Mary McMahon around say 1840 either in that parish, nor to a Donnelly, anywhere in Ireland.

There were a number of Donnelly (and spelling variant) households in the parish, as you will probably have seen from the tithe records.  In Griffiths Valuation (1860), there was a Paul Donnelly who had a labourer’s cottage which he rented from Peter Macrory (a farmer). His was the only Donnelly household in the townland.
