McLoughlin's out of Leitrim, Ireland

I'm looking for information on Patrick McLoughlin born in Leitrim, Ireland about 1814. His parents are Murtagh McLoughlin and Mary.

He emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

His wife was Bridget Leonard.

Their children are: Mary J, John, Elizabeth, and Arabella. With the exception of Arabella who was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA all the other children were born in Ireland.

Any additional information or direction as to how I might research from this point would be appreciated.

Hi Les, Do you have any baptismal/marriage/census, etc. records for any of the McLaughlins? Maybe you could show us some. For instance, where did you get the info that only Arabella was born in the US? Thanks!

@Patricia,

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes. I have US Census records including an 1865 Mass State Census.

I have also attached Patrick's Naturalization records showing he was from Leitrim, Ireland.

In most of his records he is listed with the occupation of "Gardener". His son John was a "gasfitter", and he ran his own business.

Both of those occupations made it easier to track them in the records.

You will also notice that in the 1870 US Census both Patrick's family and his son John's family are living together.

I'm not positive about the passenger list, however it does look promising and it is reasonable with the arrival dates listed on the Naturalization records as well as census records I have for John in the 1900's.

I also have the death record for Patrick McLoughlin. Note the occupation of Gardener, his address is consistent with the city directory and his parents names are given as Murtagh and Mary.

I have other records, such as City Directories, and other vital records concerning his children.

I have not found a birth/baptismal record for Arabella. Still looking.

Les,

There is a tree on Ancestry that suggest the family was from Kiltoghert, Leitrim. They have baptismal records for Jane 1838, Catherine 1840, Mary 1841, and Murty (Murtagh) 1843. There are various spellings of Bridget's last name- Lenihan, Lin..., Linene, so I am not sure if this is the correct family.

I found this record on Ancestry. Maybe there is a family connection.

MaryTV,

I think the tree your referring to on Ancestry is 1-Lang Michael/Tiernan Catherine Sligo Family Tree from Leafinder. If that's true then I have worked with Leafinder. I think the baptismal records are really promising, however I was hoping to get something else to corroborate this is the correct baptismal record. My specific connection is with a John who is a son of Patrick. When I couldn't find John with the Kiltoghert family I was hesitant to accept them as mine. I did find a John (although the year seems off) with some others in Cloonclare. It was only after you brought this up that I checked the distance between Kiltoghert and Cloonclare and it seems to be only about an hour. That's not very far at all.

I also see that the witness for Murty's baptism was a Murty McLaughlin. I found that interesting. How common a name is Murtagh anyway?

I had not see the record from 1829 for Mary with the parents Murtough and Mary. I actively looked for a Patrick with those same parents and could not find the record.  This Mary as a possible sister to Patrick it gives me something more to dig into.

Thanks

Les

Thank you MaryTV, for your responses.

To Mary and anyone else,

I've been re-reviewing the baptismal records from Kiltoghert. They do look promising. My direct connection to the family is through their son John, however there is no John with these parents in Kiltoghert. I did find a possible John McLoughlin in Cloonclare, which is only an hour away. There are other McLoughlins in Cloonclare but the ages and names of the parents, leads me to believe they are not part of John's immediate family.

I'm struggling with how to correlate the Kiltoghert records with the Cloonclare records as well as with the Passenger ship record I have.

In Kiltoghert they had a son Murty, but I see no record of Murty leaving Ireland. He is not on the passenger list that I found.  I also can't find any records of his death/burial, or marriage.

What other records can I search to verify this family from Kiloghert are no longer in Ireland? If I were to find them in a record after my 1853 passenger list, then either I have the wrong list or this is the wrong family.

Any suggestions where I might look next?
