McLOUGHLIN/CESNAN

I have been trying to find my Irish Roots for many years without success. My Gt.Gt. Grandparents were Owen McLOUGHLIN & Ann CESNAN & by the 1851 UK Census they were living in Chorley, Lancashire. Their youngest child Bridget was baptised in Chorley in 1851 & I was told that on the Church record it states that her mother's maiden name was CESNAN & her godmother was Bridget CESNAN (born Lancashire, married but I can't find her husband)- thename Cesnanis eluding me completely.

Ages are also a problem because my 2 x gt. grandfather kept altering his to suit his purpose I think

i.e. age at 1851 census = Owen age 30 Ann age 33

1861 " 43 46

1871 Not found

1881 64 72

1891 64 80

The only clue I have is that my Gt.Grandfather Michael stated on the 1871 Census that he was born in Co. Sligo.

Owen & Ann's children born Ireland were Michael (as above) abt 1839, Thomas abt 1841, Peter abt 1846,Hannah abt 1849 all born Ireland & Bridget born 1851 in Lancashire.

Any help you be appreciated.

Hi Anita

Have you learned any more about Michael and his family?

Best wishes

Hello Clare,

Nothing at all on this family.  One common surname & the other seems to be so uncommon that only a few exist in the early 1800s.

Hi Anita

I haven't been able to find out any more about the family in Sligo or elsewhere. In some ways having an uncommon name is a good thing, but as you say it is so uncommon as to be recorded rarely! You could keep an eye on the Early Birth and Marriage Index as it is updated regularly. If your ancestor doesn't appear today they might at a later time. You can earn more about it HERE

Best wishes
