McKenna & Philips County Louth Ireland

My Roman Catholic ggggrandparents were John McKenna(born approximately late 1700's to early 1800's Count Louth) and Margaret Philips baptized 23 May 1805 County Louth, parish/civil district Togher, address Skeaghmore. Margaret was an illegitimate birth (according to NLI). Her parents were Pat Philips and Ann Galagher.

John and Margaret married 13 Oct 1828 Mellifont near Drogheda Ireland witnessed by Peter Philips & Joseph Mathews source rootsireland.ie.

I have found 5 of their children on rootsireland.ie baptismal records. All were baptized County Louth, Parish/District Drogheda catholic. Here is their baptismal dates & names:

Mary McKenna 7-Feb-1830

Peter McKenna 9-April-1832

Thomas McKenna 22-Dec-1839

Peter McKenna 22 July-1843

Margaret McKenna 15-Oct-1845

I am looking for any & all info about John McKenna & Margaret Philips as I stated in my first sentence. Trying to find birth date of John McKenna, who his parents & siblings were. Hitting brick walls and so confused with similar names. I sure could use some help. Sincerely, Brenda Shepherd

Hi Brenda, at this point we are relying on church records and it is difficult to locate a baptism or likely one if the fathers name is not known. Mary Philips is from Greenhills from the marriage record, this is north of the river Boyne and to the east of the town along the river, it is in Mellifont parish though separate from the main parish, you can see this on the map on the Registers NLI website.

As the baptism is from 1830 I assume it is St Peters parish, the main parish north of the river (baptism records for St Mary's south of the river are only from about 1834) so assume the lived in St Peters.

If you look at this website and check the surnames for burials I may be able to access the inscriptions of the headstones. https://jbhall.clahs.ie/ I will return to this later but we are having visitors now and I will not be available much onver the next two weeks but will check in.

There is a  Facebook group Drogheda Down Memory Lane Lost Families, not the most busy page but may be worth a try and there are similiar pages for Louth. Drogheda would have been a busy place at the time, the port and many industries here then.

Thank you Pat. Yes my Margaret Philips was documented as from Green Hills eastern side of Drogheda. I had already found it on nli.

Also all her kids that I have found were baptized at St. Peter's Drogheda.

I shall look at the website you mentioned for headstone inscriptions.

I will also look up Drogheda Down Memory Lane Lost Families on Facebook.

Also, I think it's possible my John McKenna's father was named William and his mother named Mary Roake possibly.

Thank you. Talk to you soon.

Brenda,

Following Irish naming patterns, it is likely that John's father was Peter, as the first son was usually named for the paternal grandfather.

It's also likely that John and wife had other children, born between 1832 and 1839. A 7-year gap is unusual.

glanvil3@aol.com

I am aware of the Irish naming patterns. It drives me nuts. It makes research difficult to say the least. So can you research a Peter McKenna as the possible father of my John McKenna and a Mary as John's possible mother?

Brenda L Shepherd

At rootsireland, I found four Johns in Louth with father Peter, one of those with mother Mary, but they were all born too late to be your John.

glanvil3@aol.com

Well darn it. Thanks for looking.

Brenda L Shepherd

Patricia I'm not at all convinced my John McKenna & Margaret Philips followed the traditional Irish naming patterns. I think it's possible my Peter McKenna  was named after the witness Peter Philips at John McKenna & Margaret Philips's wedding.

Hi Brenda, by chance a friend from Termonfeckin parish visited me the other day and I mentioned the Philips from Greenhills and he said he had recently visited the old graveyard in Newtownstabalen which is not accessible from the original entrance and he found it by crossing fields and Google maps. It appeared to have been either sprayed or cut down to clear parts, I do not want to post a photo as there are people in them and they show nothing really except a headstone from the side. However he informed a book had been published about Newtownstabalen and contained grave inscriptions for the graveyard, no Philips unfortunately but one Mckenna from Lawrence Street (Near enough to Greenhill) A neighbour in the local library got the inscription which is interesting but may or may not be relevant.

McKenna Erected by Christopher McKenna of Lawrence Street, Drogheda in memory of his father Michael McKenna who died 27th June 1832 also the above named Christopher McKenna who died in America 30th March 1879.

I have some more information but doubt it is relevant, the Philips name is more in North Louth than around Drogheda, I think at the time there was  a big linen industry in Drogheda with a lot of skilled people moving from Ulster where the industry was well established.

Regards the missing years when they were "celibate" did you try searching Roots without the mothers surname as sometimes the priest would not record the maiden name, the poorer the people the less they bothered recording or may have forgotten it by the time they wrote it up.

Away again until at least mid week.

Regards

Pat

Thank you Patricia. I will search Roots without typing in my Margaret's surname of Philips or married name McKenna. I will also check into the Christopher McKenna on Lawrence St. In Drogheda. I might try Griffith's Valuation for that

Again thank you for your help and attention. I appreciate it. Sincerely, Brenda Shepherd

Brenda L Shepherd

Brenda, see here in C of I registers a number of Philips under each heading, including a shoe maker in Lawrence St. and a gent too.  C of I were responsible for burials of all so if RC in burials you will see dissenter after the name. St. Peter’s Drogheda Registers (1702 – 1900) - Church of Ireland - A Member of the Anglican Communion

I will post more stuff later on Cord Road graveyard and McKenna.

I am Pat the local Drogheda volunteer, Patricia is another volunteer but not the same person despite the names.

Sunday Gate is so named as Drogheda was a walled town and it was the gate opened on a Sunday to allow Catholics attend mass, it is still called that but only bits of the wall remain as it was demolished in the late 1700s.

There are another number to add later from Tullyallen to the north of the town but only a few.
