McGuigan, McQuiggan

I would like to find the parents & family of Francis McGuigan. It is said that McGuigan was the original spelling, but now some family members spell it McQuiggan and others spell it McQuiggin.  The following info is from a family genealogy written in 1939.

"Francis McQuiggan was born about 1790 near Arboe, County Tyrone, Ireland. At the age of 16 yrs he left and never heard from home after. In 1808, he joined the British Army , was sent to the West Indies, then to Canada and was with the Army at Queenston Heights and at Lundy's Lane. He worked as a Drs. Assistance. He received his discharge from the army dated Queenston, 1815 after serving 7 years 100 days. For his services he was given a grant of 200 acres of land of his choice. He settled on Lot 6, Con.3, Township of Bayham, County of Elgin, two miles west of Vienna, Ont....

" After about 150 years, the McQuiggans of Canada have made contact with a family of McQuiggans living in Australia. Through them we received the following information.

Arthur McQuiggan who was born in Ireland about the year 1800, claimed to be one of a large family who's records show that he had a brother born in the year 1790, who left home at an early age and was never heard from again. But, now they believe that this missing brother was our great grandfather Francis..."

Hi Janet,

Thank you for your message.

You will probably need to look in church records for information on Francis? family unfortunately however, given the early date of birth it may be difficult to do so as the reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist.

Using the Irish TImes website, you can see that Catholic records for the parish do not begin until 1827:

http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Tyrone&parish=Arboe&churchid=181

Church of Ireland records however generally tend to have an earlier start date as this was the official church of the country at the time. Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

It may be an idea to contact the Irish World Heritage Centre in Tyrone for some assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email address: info@ireland-world.com

In the meantime some other websites that you may find useful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

Familysearch: www.familysearch.org

Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/tyrone/index.html

Irish Genealogy Tool-kit: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/index.html

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

Hello Emma,

Thank you so much for your response to my post. I would guess that my ancestor was probably Church of Ireland, as all his descendants were Protestant. The links you provided will be very helpful to my research.

I'm super excited to have found this post and website! I see that this post is from 2013; however I hope you find this Janet.

My father has our family tree records going back to Francis and I can confirm our family (Francis's direct descendants) still live in Bayham county to this day, where I was born and raised.

There used to be a McQuigganville out by Port Burwell, however the town does not exist now. There is still a McQuiggan Line that leads to the old homestead and grounds.

I'd love to learn more, and hope you see this post. Best wishes

Dear Tess,

I live in Michigan, USA, where my grandmother, Velma McQuiggan migrated to with her family around 1930. I have visited and toured the old family farm on McQuiggan line which is now a private resort/museum. My McQuiggan line comes down through Ozias and Francis Noel McQuiggan.

I would be happy to collaborate with you. My email address is: jtaylor.porthuron@gmail.com.

Regards, Janet Taylor
