McFarland

Hi, I've been looking for members of the Stephen McFarland family. He was the grandfather of my husband, James. Stephen's dad was Andrew and his mother was Ellen Hennessy. Thank you for any help. PS: I believe Stephen lived in Leitrim at one time.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched the 1901 census for Ireland and could not find a Stephen McFarland anywhere in Ireland.

Please provide years of birth for Stephen, Andrew and Ellen Hennessy. Perhaps they left Ireland before 1901.

McPartlin and McPartland were common surnames in Leitrim. Is it possible that was the surname in Ireland?

Hi Roger, thank you for checking for me. It's very possible that the name was changed after arriving here in the states. I have some info on my ancestry page. I'll get it and get back to you, if that's OK with you.

Roger, I had a few things wrong. This is what I know. Stephen McFarland b. 1/27/1887 in Leitrim, Ireland. His parents were Andrew and Mary (Duffy). Andrew was born in 1826 and died in 1909. Mary Duffy was born in 1825. This info is from Stephen's USA Naturalization paper and his WW1 Registration. BTW: Stephen married Catherine Keaveny who is also from Ireland. They married here in 1911.

Denise:

The info on Stephen's Naturalization papers might be incorrect. If he was born in 1887 then his mother was 62 when she had him. I located a civil death index record for an Andrew McFarland in Co. Donegal. No idea if this is the father of Stephen.

hi Roger,
wow, it's been a long time since i remembered about this site! i'm so sorry to have allowed you to wait so long before i
answered your last comment,
especially since you went to so
much trouble trying to help me.
Now to get back to the info you supplied. You were right about Stephen's naturalization info. Here's the kicker - Stephen was actually born Stephen McPartlan, dob: dec. 17, 1885 in Boleymaguire, Innismagrath. His birth is registered in Drumkeeran, Manorhamilton, Leitrim. His dad was Andrew of Boleymaguire & his mom: Mary McNiff of Gluckawn(?). They were married May 14, 1883 in Drumkeeran, Manorhamilton, Leitrim. Andrew died March 3, 1944 in Boleymaguire while Mary died Oct 23, 1929 in Manorhamilton. Stephen left for Boston, Massachusetts on the Zeeland, April 20, 1910. he arrived April 28th and filed for naturalization on June 14, 1920. It appears that the name McPartlan became McFarland after his arrival in Boston. And it remained McFarland.
So, Roger, that is what i have learned so far about my late husband's family. I think now it's time for me to check on my own paternal g-grandparents - John J Lynch & Johanna M McGrath from, i believe, County Cork. Thank you again, Roger, for your help.

Hi, My aunty has been doing some research and found that there was a Stephen McFarlane born about 1820 in Co. Leitrim. She even even contacted the Leitrim Genealogy Centre with no luck.

He could possibly even have been protestant. Is there any census data from thatg time anyone has? His name sake, Stephen McFarlane, NSW, Australia

Hello group, I have been doing research for 40 + years on my irish ancestors. I recently have been looking for a connection of why a name change from McNiff to Duffy in County Leitrim, Ireland. I know for certain that my ancestors in 1860's were in Bargowla, Drumkeeran, County Leitrim, Ireland (St Brigid's Parish to be exact). Many of my dna matches have the surname Duffy and for some reason (unknown to me) they have that the surname changed from McNiff to Duffy and this does seem to be the case. The above questions of McPartlin/McFarlane/McFarland all seem to fall into that catagory as they all fall into my tree. I attempted to look further into Leitrim records and I wonder if it could have been because of legal issues or property reasons. If anyone would like to contact me, I am currently on this site and may not see the responses. I have so many spellings of McPartlane that I even have trouble finding a person in my tree. Also, back in the 1980's, just after computors came into existence, I was in touch with a person by the name of McGing who was doing some transcribing and requested help. I'm not sure how I found out but I agreed to and then got busy with work and unfortunately did not follow through. Well, enough on this however I hope this may help the Duffy researchers. Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Helen Fink. I'm not sure if we can give our email and I apologize if we are not allowed to but here goes: handot67@yahoo.com. Helen Fink
