McDonald-McCoppen Family Research

Goof afternoon,

My husband and I are planinig to visit Ireland in May/June 2026 (pending air travel), in order to further our family research. We will be catching up with some family members in Doolin. (not related to this family). We have no other plans as yet. I have included details.

McDonald – McCoppin Families are the brother’s connections in Armagh, Antrim, Northern Ireland this is what I have so far is research was carried out by Mary McConnon;

The census of Ireland 1851, has the family at 12 Montiaghs Townland, County of Aghagallon, County Antrim. We have been fortunate to have this vital piece of information as many families do not have these census records.

At the time of the 1851 censes there were other McDonald’s listed as neighbour’s, these families lived either side of James, Fanny and family, it would suggest that perhaps they were related. Further research will be carried to establish if they were related.

The Griffith Valuation of Rateable Property in Ireland 1846-1865, shows at the time in Montiaghs Townland, Civil Parish of Aghagallon were occupiers and the lessor was the Marquis of Herford.

At the time in Montaighs Townland, Civil Parish of Aghagallon, were occupiers from the Marquis of Hertford. The valuation survey published 1861-2.

Plots 77, 78 & 79, Alexander McDonald consisting of House, Office and Land.

Plot 82, Mary McDonald consisting of House and Land.

Plots 86 & 87, Henry McDonald consisting of House and Land.

Plots 91, 92 & 93, William McDonald consisting of House, Offices and Land.

Alexander McDonald died 28 Jun 1867 at Ballycairn, Aghalee, Lurgan, aged 60 years. Present at his death at Ballycairn, William McDonald, Son signed his mark x.

Isabella (mother) died 14 Jun 1894 at Ballycairn, Aghalee, Lurgan, aged 75 years. Present at death Eliza Mercer, Niece signed her mark x.

No further details on James and Fanny other than in the census?

Would like to locate where Alexander and Isabella are buried?

Isabella McCoppin family thus far;

Attached are details of the McCoppin family, DNA matches have confirmed the relationship to this information provided by other family members and external sources.

Here’s a link to the 1851 census. The full information there helpfully mentions the family were Church of England (so Church of Ireland).

For graves I would search Aghagallon Church of Ireland graveyard. There is another in the parish at Magheranagaw, so worth checking it too. Not everyone could afford a gravestone and so many people were buried in unmarked graves.

The full census also tells you James McDonald married in 1817 and Alexander in 1846. Here’s Alexander’s marriage to Isabella McCappin in Lisburn Register Office:

Aghagallon/Aghalee has burial records that start in 1782 so you may find out when James & Fanny died from them. Rootsireland has some years, PRONI has a microfilm copy and the church has the originals. (Death registration started in 1864. If there aren't deaths for them 1864 onwards, then the inference is they died before that).
