McDonald family of Russaun, Killasnet, Leitrim

I am looking into family of Alexander McDonald and Mary Mitchel of West Russaun, Killasnet.

I am fairly certain they are my 3g grandparents.

Alexander died in 1855 and Mary in 1865.

At least four of their children emigrated to US, including my 2g grandmother Anna, born ca 1845. They settled in

the Bridgeport area of Connecticut. Other children in US were Michael, Patrick and Alexander.

Daughter Bridget married Terence Feeley of Manorhamilton.

Hoping to expand tree upwards from Alexander and Mary.

I checked the parish register and this is all that is written, not even the date, how sad, she appears to have died sometime between the end of March and the end of April 1865

CB,

Unfortunately, you will not be able to find records further back beyond Alexander and Mary because the birth and marriage records for the RC parish of Killasnett began in 1852. There are gaps in the records as well. Baptisms: 1852-1869, 1874-1875, 1878-1897; and marriages" 1852-1870 and 1879-1899. Assuming here that your ancestors were Catholic. Not sure that the above death record is for your Mary McDonald as that person would have been born in 1795.

Carolyn

I was able to find out that when Mary died in 1865, the informant was her son John.

The spelling of the townland was Rassaun and there is a Rassaun East and a Rassaun West,. I believe the family lived in Rassaun West. See 1901 census record for John McDonald in Rassaun West.

John's wife was Anne Travers and I located baptismal records for three children: Mary 1864 Anne 1867 Francis 1874

Thanks to all of you!

Eileen, Yes, that is the burial record for Mary McDonald whom I presume is my 3g grandmother.

Carolyn, I do know about the record dates and gaps. I was hoping someone might have a family tree in place for these individuals.

Eileen  - that is the wrong Alexander McDonald. Mine was buried Feb 1855 and was from Rassaun.

Roger, I believe that John McDonald, son of Alexander, husband of Anne Travers, is related in some way, possibly an older brother to my 2g grandmother. However, a photo of Mary's 1865 burial is shown above and I do not see the name of son John. However, in the incorrect burial of another Alexander at Ballyglass, in 1876, also shown above, the name of son John is most prominent. As Alexander appears to be a family name, he is undoubtedly related too.

Again, thanks to all of you

Carol

Carol,

My apologies on the error I made about Mary's death record....I read it too quickly and thought she was born in 1845, but that was her daughter Anna.

Regards,

Carolyn
