McCrory Family

Hi there,

My gr grandmother was Hannah McCrory (1841-1907), from Cullybackey, dau of William (I believe) and Mary McKearney NOT PROVEN. She married Samuel McClarty (1837-1887) from Ballyminstra in 1859 in Reg's Office in Ballymena. I have found nine children born to them, my grandmother Jane Leetch McClarty (marr Wm Henry Boyle) being one of them. Most of them ended up in Canada, where my father was born. I have 1901 Irish census information, but was not able to find any earlier census info. I would really like to find out more about any possible siblings, and would like to be able to verify her parents. Also any info about her husband Samuel. His father was James, a soldier.

Hope someone can help me here.

Thank you

Pat (Boyle) Ford

Pat,

Apart from some fragments, there are no censuses in Ireland before 1901. They were all destroyed for various reasons.  One of the problems of Irish research.

There are a number of trees on Ancestry with this family. The Boyle family for example (owner Pat Ford who appears to reside in Canada0 has a list of siblings for both Samuel and Hannah. Samuel’s parents listed as James McClarty & Rose Douglas.

Not certain all the information on that tree seems 100% accurate to me. For example, it has William McCrory as dying in 1878 in Clogher.

However that man was a farmer. He was listed as farming in Clogher in Griffiths Valuation in 1862 whereas the 1859 marriage certificate says Hannah’s father was a weaver in Cullybackey.  Different location and occupation. Unlikely to be the same man.

I don’t see a likely death for Hannah’s father, 1864 onwards (which is when death registration began) so suspect he died before it. He’ll be hard to trace. Weavers could rarely afford a gravestone and so is probably in an unmarked grave.

If you know/think Hannah was born in Cullybackey, then you could search church records for her baptism. She gave her age as 22 in 1859 so perhaps born around 1837 or thereabouts.  You haven’t said what denomination but I assume Presbyterian or Reformed Presbyterian. Cullybackey’s baptism records for those 2 denominations are in PRONI. Personal visit required to view them.

Hi Elwyn,

That Boyle tree you were referring to is mine. I'm sure there are many errors on it. One of the problems for me is the geography of Northern Ireland. I'm learning as I go, regarding various localities. Don't always think to refer to a map to see distances between villages, etc. I have a DNA connection to one of William's other children, Jane, who married John James Harbison. You will notice that I have put "not proven" on some of my people. Wish I could remove that phrase.

As a further unconnected note, I see that Judy McClarty Kushnir (a distant McClarty cousin of mine) will be visiting your area in April. I believe that you might be making contact with her. I have a whole bunch of McClarty info on my tree. (I also have purchased the Layde Cemetery book, which gave me a lot of McClarty information.)

Anyway, thank you for your input. I'll keep digging away.

Pat,

Yes after I had posted my reply, I did wonder if it was your tree. Pretty sure that farmer's death doesn't relate to your Hannah's father. Weavers and farmers generally were different occupations. Farmers generally stayed put (as the Clogher one seems to have done) whereas weavers moved about to follow the available work.

Be aware that a lot of the church records for the Cullybackey area are not on-line and so to search for Hannah's baptism, and that of any siblings really needs a personal visit to PRONI in Belfast.

Yes I am meeting Judy next month to show her the McClarty & Murphy homes in the Cushendall area. I have already sent her photos of most of them, and of the graves in Cushendall Church of Ireland graveyard. The Old Layd graveyard was too dangerous for me to go into. There had been a period of heavy rain and it was very slippery, and had pools of water everywhere. (I fell over at the entrance). It's very steep and at my age not worth risking it. Not sure whether it'll be safe next month. We'll have to see.

Is there some way that I could have someone check those records at PRONI. I would be happy to pay for this service.

By the way, I have changed William's death date on my Boyle Family Tree. Thanks for that tip.

Many thanks again,

Pat

I wondered if this might be a brother to  your Hannah McCrory:

Thank you Elwyn for your helpful information. I had the Jane Wilson/Boyle line in my tree, but hadn't actually connected it with Hannah McCrory, mainly because there were several brothers with the first name of William. I now understand that sometimes the persons actually went by their middle name, which would explain all these Williams.

John McCrory has a Harbison connection (proven through DNA).

William McCrory - ditto

Jane McCrory - ditto

and the rest are NOT PROVEN.

Hope you have a great visit with Judy McClarty Kushnir. Wish I could be there!

I really value your input.
