McCracken/Little

Hi I am looking for any information on a Charles McCracken born early 1800's who married a Martha Little. They had a son Charles who was born in 1850 in Glassgow, but it is very possible that only Martha travelled to Scotland and had the child. The family have searched the Scottish records extensively and even sort professional help, with no trace of marriage or births for Charles & Martha. Except for a possible match in a1851 Scotish Census showing a Martha McCracken aged 31 born in Ireland with a son Charles 8 months old born in Glassgow, living in a boarding house in Glassgow.

Charles Junior immigrated to Australia and married Francis Harris in1885. On hismarriage certificate it states his father Charles was a teacher. Even though Charles junior was born in Scotland, family Daughters of Charles Junior weresure the family originated in Ireland, (and a recent DNA test by one of the decendents seems to confirmthis) unfortunatley I have no parish information. Even a suggestion of which parish either of these names were likely to originate from would give me a clue where to start looking.

Colleen,

You don’t say what denomination your ancestor was but I’d guess Presbyterian. Do you know?

Statutory marriage registration started in Ireland in April 1845, for non RC marriages. RC marriages were only included from 1864 onwards. I searched the non RC marriages 1845 – 1851 but did not find Charles & Martha’s marriage. So they may have married before that, or it may have been RC, or they married outside Ireland. (Or they didn’t marry at all).

The names are most common in Ulster and I’d suspect they came from one of the Ulster counties. Perhaps Antrim or Down. You can use this site to search where the 2 surnames are found together and the answer is almost exclusively in the counties of Ulster:

https://www.johngrenham.com/surnames/

Were there any other children born in Scotland? If Martha had a child in 1855 or from 1861 onwards, then the Scottish birth certificates should record where and when the parents married.

Also have you searched the Scottish Poor Law records? If Martha was destitute, and had to claim under the Poor Law (as many immigrants from Ireland did) then the Poor Law files usually record parish of origin in Ireland, as well as details of next of kin. The Poor Law records for the Glasgow area are in the Mitchell Library in Glasgow. They will do a look up for a small fee.

Incidentally if the family were Presbyterian (as the names suggest to me), then that points to their being descendants of Scots settlers who came to Ireland in the 1600s. Ethnicity based on DNA needs to be taken with a fair pinch of salt.  It’s not very reliable, and should be just used for amusement, in my opinion. There was always massive movement around the British Isles since the first settlers crossed the land bridge from Europe 500,000 years ago. People have been moving around endlessly ever since. Bear in mind too that whilst England has been inhabited for over 500,000 years, Ireland has only been inhabited for about 7000 years. And the majority of those first settlers appear to have come from England and Wales. So from a DNA perspective separating the Irish from the Scots from the Welsh from the English is probably scientific nonsense. The majority share common Brythonic origins.

Thanks Elwyn,

You are a wealth of knowledge and given us lots of clues on where to look.  I will try to find out which denomination they were and let you know.

I don't have any definitive answer for you but I will tell you what I know.  I suspect that your Martha may have been a sister to my great grandfather, Francis Little, and my great gramdmother, Margaret Little Redman.  You can find Francis and his wife Hannah in the 1851 census of Irleand.  They emigrated to the United States in 1873.  My grandfather, John Little was not with them and I have not been able to find out when he emigrated.  He married his cousin, Nancy Redman,, and my father was one of their children.  I have had my DNA done and have some close matches with descendants of Martha Little.  I had the following correspondence with one of them.  Hope it fits with what you know.

Hi Dorothy,
LITTLE
It looks like your grandparents (John Little and Nancy Agnes Redman) were first cousins of each other and shared Little ancestry and I wonder whether that results in any increase in our cousin closeness?

My great great grandmother was Martha Little and I would love to find out how she connects to your Littles. I do not know the names of her parents, or where and when she was born, however I can strongly presume that she was born in Northern Ireland, somewhere in Antrim.

Martha Little married Charles McCracken who died in around 1851. They had a son John McCracken who died of typhoid in the Crimean War, a son Charles McCracken who was lost at sea, and a daughter Margaret Jane McCracken. After husband Charles McCracken died about 1851, Martha Little married James David, and after he died she married James McAlister, a retired sea captain. I would love to know when she died and where she is buried, and how she connects to your Littles.

Her daughter Margaret Jane McCracken (b. 1847 N.Ireland; d. 1923 Tecumseh, Michigan) was the second wife of Hugh H HANNA (b. 1837 Belfast, N.Ireland; d. 1920 Tecumseh, Michigan).

The first wife of Hugh H Hanna (1847-1920) was Mary Mellon (m. 1857 in Ballymena, Antrim, No. Ireland) and they had four girls and one boy. Two of their daughters married Redman brothers who were the sons of Samuel Redman and Margaret Little (and thus the brothers of your grandmother Agnes Nancy Redman).
Sarah Hanna (1857-1881) married Samuel Redman (1856-1933). No children.
Mary Hanna (1860-1945) married William H. Redman (1851-1908). No children.

When Mary Mellon died in 1879 in New York, Hugh H Hanna married my gg grandmother Margaret Jane McCracken and they had four boys and one girl, including my grandfather who was also named Hugh H Hanna (b. 1884 Geneseo, Livingston, NY; d. 1960 Tecumseh, Lenawee, Michigan).

My grandfather Hugh H Hanna had two daughters whose accounts I manage on ancestrydna and 23andme:
Elisabeth Jo Hanna (my aunt)
Martha Hanna (my mother)

Please write me on my personal email at jocarlson@me.com and I'll share more.

Matty McCrackin Little married John Davis on 23.1.1858, registered in Larne. Then she married James McAlister on 6.3.1877 in Larne Registry Office. Her surname was Lyttle, otherwise McCracken, otherwise Davis on that marriage certificate. Her father was Andrew Lyttle, shoemaker. She was living in Mill St, Larne at that date. James McAlister was living in Main Street.

Thanks for the information, Elwyn.  Francis and Margaret's father was Andrew Little and mother Margaret McCutichson.  That is from Francis' death certificate.  Francis was a shoemaker before he emigrated so I think that my suspicion is correct.  I wish I could find more information about Andrew.

Hi Dorothy

DNA has come a long way since 2018. I am with Ancestry and .My Heritage. Looking at my shared matches it looks like Andrew Little was married to Margaret McCutcheon not McCutchison.

I have a triangulated match with a McCutcheon from County Down who matches with about a dozen people who are related to the Little's .

They all have overlapping DNA on chromosome two, which is very interesting,

Just to let you know there are quite a few descendants out there!!

Best Wishes

Rob

That is entirely possible.  The name McCutchison came from Francis' death certificate and we have never been quite sure of the spelling.  Am I one of your matches? or my brother Allan Little? or sister Esther Kroeger?

Hi Dorothy

Which company or companies have you tested with?

Rob,

I started out with the National Geographic project which got transferred to FamilytreeDNA mitrochondrial.  I have also tested with Ancestry.com and 23 and me.  My brother, Allan Little, has also tested with FamilytreeDna Y chromosome and with Ancestry.com.

Hi Dorothy

I had a good look at all the companies you mentioned but no we are not a match.

I am a match to Jane Carlson who has corresponded with you before, also her mother.aunt and brother as well.

I am also a match to Colin Seton who is a descendant of Charles McCracken junior who came to Australia.

I also live in Australia but I think that is a coincidence as the match would be at least 4th Cousin.

The McCutcheon's that I am a match with are from County Down ,not exactly Antrim but pretty close!!

I only have one Irish match on my father's side so it narrows the field somewhat!
