McCarthy/Heuston (Oola, Co Limerick) & Hallahan/Stout (Ahiohill, Co Cork)

I am researching both my Mother and Father's family tree.I would be grateful for any advice and information you might be able to provide to help please.

My Mother was a daughter of Patrick McCarthy and Mary Ann Heuston, who were from Oola, Co Limerick. I know that my Grandparents Patrick and Mary Ann married in 1923 and are buried in Oola cemetery.

The Census of Ireland 1911 records show that Patrick was living in Oola and was a soldier. The head of the household was Patrick's mother Ellen McCarthy - my great Grandmother. I haven't so far been able to trace Ellen's maiden name and therefore her parents. There is no trace of the family in the 1901 census records. I wonder if they might have been living outside of Ireland - possibly in England or Wales. I haven't so far been able to trace Patrick's father, my great Grandfather. He may also have been in the military or working abroad at the time of the 1901 census - or might already have passed away by then?

The census of Ireland records for 1901 and 1911 show that Mary Ann was living with her parents Michael and Mary in Oola. I haven't so far been able to trace Michael or Mary's parents or to identify Mary's maiden name.

My Father was a son of William Hallahan and Katie (also called Catherine and Kate) Stout. I know from the Enniskeane/Desertserges parish records that William and Kate married in 1906 and the Census of Ireland records for 1911 shows them living in Boulteen, Ahiohill, Co Cork. Hallahan (with various spelling variations) was a common name in the area and I have found numerous parish baptism, marriage and death records. But so far I haven't so far been able to confirm who William's parents were. The census for 1901 and 1911 has a Michael and Mary Hallahan living in Ardkitt East, Boulteen, Co Cork. It's possible that they could be William's parents - or even his Grandparents? I have also found two Enniskeane marriage records for 1870 showing William Hallihan marrying Jane Moxley and John Hallahan marrying Julie Leary. The timeframe could make either couple William's parents?

I have had no luck in tracing Katie Stout's parents. Stout isn't such a common name in the area and there are few references to it in the parish records I have been able to access. I have found an Enniskeane baptism record in 1851 for Eliza Stout, whose parents were John Stout and Cath Donovan. It's possible that John might be Katie's grandfather?

Apologies for such a long message. I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks.

William

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I located 1893 and 1897 civil birth records for a Michael Heuston and a Mary Heuston and the mother's maiden name was Ryan.   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

The older children appear to have a mother with the surname Verdin and a mother named Margaret or Maggie Verdin so were there two mothers.

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

Upon further checking I located an 1893 marriage for Michael and Mary Ryan and an 1885 marriage of Michael Heuston and Margaret Verdon so obviously Margaret died at some point in the late 1880s.

Good morning Roger

Thank you for such a prompt and comprehensive response.

It's a real discovery to know that Michael Heuston was married twice. I knew that there was a historic family link between the Heuston's and Verdon's in Oola, but not exactly how they were related. Having the maiden names of both of Michael's wives will also help greatly in further research.

I noticed on the link that you sent through for the 1897 civil birth record for my grandmother Mary Ann to Michael and Mary Heuston that further down the page there is another registration of interest.

It shows the registration of a son John to Patrick and Ellen Mcarthy. It would be a fair assumption that John was a brother of my grandfather Patrick. He was not listed on the 1911 census return made by Ellen, so perhaps he passed away in childhood. The entry also confirms that my great grandfather was also called Patrick and that Ellen's maiden name was Shannon. That will help greatly in trying to identify their parents. I also now need to research where the family were between 1897 and 1911 and to try to discover the fate of great grandfather Patrick and his son John.

The 1906 civil marriage record for William and Kate Hallahan is really helpful in identifying their fathers names. It would seem to confirm that William's parents were Michael and Mary (maiden name Hartnette), who are shown as living in Ardkitt East (Boulteen), Co Cork in the 1901 & 1911 census returns. I know that Michael and Mary married on 17th April 1855. And knowing that Kate's father was called Patrick will greatly help in researching the Stout branch of the family further.

Thank you again for all your assistance. It has given me plenty to go on. I'm sure that I'll be back in touch again soon.

Many thanks.

Dear William

McCarthy/Heuston is also my family

My Grandad was Michael McCarthy (1894-1958) brother of Patrick Jnr (1890-1923) Let me tell you what I've researched so far.

Patrick McCarthy Snr (1847-1899) married Ellen Shannon/Shanahan on 13th July 1887 he was a 40yr old widower and she was 26yr old spinster. By 1901 census Ellen (recorded as Ellen Carty)  was a widow living with Patrick 10yrs, Michael 6yrs, John 3yrs and Honora 2yrs, also 2 lodgers. She states she had 8 children, 4 living. I have found 7 children, Ellen 1887,Denis 1888, Patrick (your grandad) 1890, Johanna 1893, Michael (my grandad) 1894, John 1897 and Honoria 1898.

Patrick McCarthy Snr died 1899 aged 49yrs

In 1911 Ellen is living with her son Denis who is married to Elley and they have a son called Patrick. Along with her son and daughter Patrick 19yrs Soldier and Noria (Honoria) 12yrs.

I know from the marriage cert Ellen's father was called Michael Shanhan and they came from Knockavella Kilpatrick Co Tipperary. As yet I have not found any soldier records for Patrick, and as it is before the outbreak of WW! I wonder if he was in an Irish regiment?

Mary Anne Heuston had a child before marriage called John Joesph Nash on 18th March 1914, the father John Nash emigrated  from Oola to New York in November 1913, just before the childs birth. She then married Patrick McCarthy on 18th Nov 1923 at St Nicholas Church Solohead, Tipperary.

Maybe you can confirm for me I have five children recorded for Mary Anne & Patrick. Eileen, Noreen, Kathleen, Mary and Patrick. Is one of these your Mum?

Very exciting to have matched records

Looking forward to hearing from you

Kind regards

Claire Collins (nee McCarthy)

Dear Claire

It's lovely to hear from you and very exciting to make the connection.

I am happy to switch to email in the future, if you wish. I'm sure we have lots of information to share and questions for each other. My email is w.hallahan@sky.com

I have seen a memorial/keepsake card of your Grandfather Michael. He was a very distinguished looking gentleman.I look forward to finding out more about your branch of the family.

I have just returned from a visit to Ireland. I am making arrangements to have my Grandparents Patrick and Mary-Ann's headstone in Oola cemetery cleaned and restored.

My Mother Catherine (who everyone called Kathleen) was a daughter of Patrick and Mary-Ann. They had one additional daughter to the names you have found through your research - Eileen, Norah, Christina, Mary and Patrick. And yes you are correct that Mary-Ann also had a son John Nash, who was born before she married Patrick.

I also so far haven't been able to find Patrick's military records. I have searched without success on the National Archives British Military Records and digital online records for Irish soldiers who were in the British Army. I believe, but can't confirm, that he was still in the Army during WW1. He was awarded medals for his army service, which are with a family member in Florida.

Your research has helped to solve the mystery of where the McCarthy family were at the time of the 1901 census. I should have known they wouldn't have strayed away from Oola! I hadn't searched using 'Carty', but know that it wasn't uncommon to have variations on the spelling of surnames in the census returns and in the registration of births, marriages and deaths.

I have information on Michael and Patrick's sister Nora (Honoria/Noria in the census forms). She moved to London and worked in a private school in Woodside Park, Barnet. I recall visiting her at the school when I was a child. She never married and passed away on the 4th February 1969 and is buried in Bells Hill cemetery in Barnet, which is close to where I now live.

I have found IrishGenealogy.ie to be very helpful in accessing registration of births, marriages and deaths information. This includes:

The registration of the death of Patrick McCarthy snr on 11 December 1900, aged 65, widow Ellen

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

Marriaage of Denis McCarthy and Ellen Rice on 8 January 1911.Fathers Patrick McCarthy and John Rice.

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

Marriage of Denis and Ellen's son Patrick to Ellen Noonan on 18 December 1930. This took place in Waterford. I believe that that they had at least three sons. A link that I have yet to fully research.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes.

William

Hi. My father - John McCarthy (b 1935 Waterford, d 2017 Weston Super Mare, England)  - was one of the children of Patrick McCarthy and Ellen Noonan (married 30/12/1930). They had six children (Denis, Maura, Evelyn, John, Patrick, Michael). I believe that Patrick remarried in England and died in Skegness in 1982. If there is any further information on Patrick I would be grateful to know. Thanks Evelyn.
