McAteer

I am researching McAteer family in Co Tyrone. Possible family of William and Mary Ellen McAteer and son Robert near Derrygortreavy and wondering if other siblings and if Robert moved to Coalisland in later years?

Thanks

Thank you so much for all this info. The children all seemed to die young apart from Robert ( if he is the same Robert) who died 9th March 1958 in Cranebrook Old People’s Home, Ballynakelly , near Coalisland. As far as I know they were church of Ireland and the parents were married on 11th July 1863 at Derrygortreavy C of I. What church they attended thereafter I don’t know but in1901 census Mary Ellen is listed as widow and son Robert 27 in Dunaony, Derrygortreavy. In 1911 census for Cormullagh, Derrygortreavy there is a servant noted living with Thomas Hall whose name is Robert McAteer.

Wondering if somehow Robert managed to get himself to Brackaville, Coalisland where he lived in a small house with about an acre of land. Some of my family said there was a lady Matilda (Tillie) lived with him who they always assumed to be his sister???

We have been unable to find burial plots for any of them. Any ideas???

Very many thanks

Hazel

Marriage cert for Alexander Cardwell and Lizzie McAteer 1897

Robert and Eliza (Lizzie) appear to be the only children to survive in that dreadful time. I did come across many Matilda births which are likely first cousins of this family but no record of a daughter Matilda to William and Mary Ellen. How hard their lives must have been especially with the loss of so many of their children. There are many cemeteries in the Dungannon area, I will keep trying to see if I get a result on family burials.

Thank you for continuing to look for burial plots- very much appreciated. I live in Edinburgh but originally a McAteer from Brackaville. My father was Isaac McAteer married to Mary Jane Cardwell from Drumconnor.. Isaac was the son of William John Mateer and Matilda Lamont who were married in1907. William John was the son of William Mateer and Margaret Lamont married in 1861. As far as we know he was the son of William Mateer and Mary Crawford. It is difficult when they have the same first names and Mateer became McAteer but relatives in Belfast maintain Mateer.

We know there were relatives in Ainsworth Ave, Belfast in 1911 census, who we think lived in Snugville Street 1901 census and prior to that would have been in Brackaville. We are trying to work out the relationship between this (my) family and the family in Derrygortreavy especially Robert who we think laterally moved to Brackaville??? All very complicated!

We do have burial plots for some of the Ainsworth Ave folk in Belfast and William John and Matilda McAteer who are buried in Newmills Presbyterian.

I have visited Proni and Groni where I obtained some records but Robert who died in Cranebrook Old People’s Home remains illusion. Very many thanks for your interest and help. H
