Mary Whelan/Phelan 1812c-1889

Tipperary

Mary Whelan was my great great grandmother. During her life time she was married 3 times. Once in Ireland and twice in Australia. Her first marriage was to Edmund (ned) Doran 14 Feb 1833 Thurles, Diocese of Cashel and Emly, Tipperary. I have cited the Parish Record and the address I think was Budding Lane, and his occupation was a Bronze Maker (I think). (The writing is a little difficult to read) Her surname looks like Phelan in the record but we have always referred to her as Whelan in Australia. Again the writing is not all that clear but it appears to read that Michael Whelan and Ellen Mahon are her parents.

Mary had a son Timothy Doran born 16 Dec 1833 in Thurles. She left Timothy in Ireland with his grand parents (it is believed she was widowed by then and could not pay for his fare out to Australia. He came to Australia on the ship "Osprey" in 1849. I am assuming he knew were his mother was livingin Goulburn New South Wales. Timothy was convicted of manslaughter and imprisoned on 1 Oct 1861 for 18 months for killing his step father Charles Huggins ( Mary's 3rd husband). Timothy was subsequently released during the week ending 18th March 1863,

I do not know when Mary arrived in Australia but it was sometime between Timothy's birth in 1833 and her 2nd marriage to Joseph Ockendon 18 August 1838 in the County of Argyle, near Goulburn in New South Wales. Mary died 18 Feb 1889 and buried in St Patrick's Cemetery, Goulburn, New South Wales. Mary married Charles Huggins (3rd husband) 8 Aug 1848 Goulburn New South Wales.

Questions:

1 Did Timothy return to Ireland as I am unable to find anything further about him after his release from prison.

2 When did Ned Doran die?

3 When did Mary leave Ireland and on which ship?

4. Am I right in thinking that Mary's parents were Michael Whelan and Mary Malhon?

I would love to hear from anyone who may know anything about this family and confirmation of any of the details I have given.

Nerida
