Mary Slattery of Mullinahone, Tipperary.

Any information on Mary - one of the Irish Famine Orphan Girls. She was in the Callan Workhouse and was selected at age 18 to join some other girls on The New Liverpool which arrived in Melbourne Australia in 1849. Unfortunately the famine database does not list her parents' names. I hope to visit there later this year and would like to find out more about her family as she is most probably a distant cousin. Any information on her and/or the Famine conditions in Mullinahone would be fantastic.

Mary,

Did Mary get married in Australia? To whom, when, and where? When and when did she die?

Regards- Mary

Thank you Mary that is a lot of interesting information. The figures in Wikipedia about the deaths support what I saw in the valuation of 1851 - a lot of vacant lots suggesting that large segments of the population had left permanently - one way or another. There are 2 Mary Slatterys in the Orphan data base. One is a Mary Teresa from Kilkenny who seems to have had descendants, she married and her parents' names are mentioned. Our Mary is listed as having been born in Mullinahone and the parents' names are not listed. She was 18 when she arrived in Melbourne. I presume that her parents were both dead if their names were not given. Perhaps even prior to her entry into Callan. (Which seems reasonable.) I have looked at the Victorian births, marriages, deaths. Unfortunately their index isn't as informative as NSW's so it didn't provide any clues as to her fate. She did have a job in Melbourne after she landed we know that.
