Mary Loughnane abt 1789 - 1869

TipperaryRoscrea (Tipperary)

I am researching the ancestry of Mary Loughnane, my 4th gr-grandmother.  I know she married Thomas Shortt, question on date. Thomas was c 1790, but I have nothing else on him. I belive they lived around Roscrea parish, Tipperary County because of a baptismal record for a son Denis Short.  A Patt Loughnane, possibly a brother is listed as a sponsor and I have found this name on the Valuations Office Book records as well as Denis Short.  Families tended to live close by from what I understand.  She died around 1869 in a place called Borrisokane, but I have not been able to confirm this.  I have no idea of siblings except for possibly a Patt, and who her parents are. Is there anyone that can help me with this family line?

Thank you so much!

Hi Debbie,
The place Borrisokane I know well. I was born near there.
Denis Short died 8th April 1900, he lived in the Terryglass area in the townland called Macaloon  often as McLoon.
One of his daughters Judith married William Armitage.
Another, Kate married James Leonard.
A son, James married Mary Collins and were in Muckloonmodderee which is the name for McLoon townland in 1901.
Another son, Michael lived next to James, he wasn't married in 1901 but a cousin was living there and she was a widow called Ann Egan.
There isn't a Mary Short in 1869 in Borrisokane or Roscrea. (they were the registration districts)
There is a Catherine Short there in 1867.
Judith known as Julia and her family lived in Kilbarron in 1901.
Kate and her family lived in Terryglass only a few doors down from the Post Office, now a shop or was 2 years ago, next to Paddy's Bar.
I hope this helps

Hi Debbie . . .

Welcome to Roscrea Town . . . and Co.Tipperary . . . and to Ireland Reaching Out . . .

So I read with interest what Margot ( ex.Borrisokane ) replied to your query . . .

and . . I have to add a few observations . . .

When I looked closely at the Cert. which Fr.Keating signed . . ( I knew him )

he is authenaticating the Birth . . of . .  Denis Shortt  . . . in 1812 . . in ROSCREA . . St.Cronans Parish Church . . .

Confirmation of which . . on Roots search . . (see below)

Yes . . . Margot found a similar Birth  (Ancestry) ... same period . . same subject NAME . . but in Borrisokane . . . (below)

But these are two seperate Registers of Church Births . . . in two diff.locations . . .

So . . the conclusion I draw . . is that you were on the right track . . with cert. of Roscrea birth.

So then I searched for surrounding Roscrea . . Loughnane // Shortt  . . family . . in that period

First . . Grace Meagher (witness) . . b.circa. . . 1790 +/- 10 yrs. . . . Nothing

Then . . Patr.Loughnane . . .b.  1790+/- 10 yrs. Roscrea area . . . Nothing . . .

____________________________________________________

Search for . . . Birth of  . . Mary Loughnane . . Roscrea area . . b. 1790 +/- 10 yrs. . . . Nothing

Search for . . .the Marriage of Mary // Thomas . . Tipperary County . . . Nothing . . c.1810 . . +/- 10 yrs.  . . .

 ditto . . .for Birth of Thomas Shortt  . .   c. 1790 +/- 10 yrs, Tipp.Co. . . . Nil . . .

Parish Records . . . BEGIN . . .for Roscrea . . . in 1810

Death search . . . Mary Shortt . . . Tipperary . . .1860 - 1880 . . . Nil

Death . . Thos.Short . . . ( see below ) . . Riverstown ( Co.Tipp ). . 1868 . . age 85 . . .( Riverstown is 12/14 miles away from Roscrea .. close to Birr Town ( Co.Offaly)

_________________________________________________________________________________________

The names of Loughnane and Meagher  . . .are still prevelant here in the Town of Roscrea  . . not so much Short(t)

_____________________________________________________________

I did see the Death cert for Mary Shortt . . . as found by Margot  . . . but for Borrisokane . . . ( not sure its your Mary )

Best I could do . . .

Cheers  . . .  Eamonn.

Thank you so much Margot and Eamonn!  First of all, I must apologize for not putting more information on Denis.  Denis immigrated to America and settled in New York 1852.  He died 1884 Kings County, New Yorki.  I am able to trace his desendents going forward to my mother.  But going back from Denis, parents etc. has been impossible.  I don't know if this makes a difference, probably not.  Hopefully someone may see this quest regarding those family lines and will be able to offer information as well.  I will keep trying.

Blessings,

debbie
