Mary Larke

Mary Larke would be my great-great grandmother. She would be born around 1819 and died at 61 years old in 1880 andher death was supposedly registered at Mountmellick, Laois. I know that her husband was William Larke. She had a son, Robert and another son, Thomas Larke, my great-grandfather who immigrated to the United States, New York City around 1870. Thomas was a plasterer who died at 40 years old on March 18, 1892. Thomas said that he came from county Cork. I see that there were quite a few Larkes in county Laois so I'm questioning county Cork as Thomas's birth place. I asked for a phocopy of Mary Larke's death in the first quarter of 1880 at Mountmellick and what came back surprised me. It said she was a spinster who died at Maryborough asylum. Would anyone have information on this Larke family ? I'm not even sure in which parish or county to place this family.

Hi Suhum . . .

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out  . . .

Your query is complex . . and answers are equally complex . . .

I am not the local Mountmellick Volunteer . . of I.R.O. . . but I will try and bring that individual into the picture . .

Question . . . have you considered that there have been a misspelling of the Surname . . in passing thru. Ellis Island ??

A quick search . . of the name given by you . . . on Roots.ie . . . it throws up the following

Church Baptism Record

Thanks, Eamonn  for your kind reply.  This site sounds so friendly and helpful!  I definitely know that the family name is LARKE though I suppose some people could spell it without the E.  But it is not Clark.  Thanks for the reference to Kevin !  I'll email him.

Hi Suhum  . . .

There are 'scraps' of Census in 1841/1851 . . which I searched for that surname . . in Queens County ( i.e. Laoise )

but . . there were no hits . . .

So I moved on to the next ' full' National Census . . of 1901 . .

and . . yes . . that name is there . . as follows . . .

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19…

in 1911 Census . . . they appear as follows . . . .

I'm guessing . . that this has to be family relations of your search . . .

I'm also guessing . . that they have been " farming " lands in this area for a century . .

Their religion would be " Church of Ireland " . . . and mostly inter-related . . .

I'm also guessing . . that their families continue to farm those lands up to now . . .

and that . . . hopefully . . the Mountmellick Volunteer . . may be able to put you in contact with them

Thanks Eamonn for that research.  I forgot to mention that my Larke family was catholic.  So I went through the censuses available for all years in all counties and jotted down the catholic Larkes.  No names correspond (Thomas, Mary, William, Robert) but it's a beginning.  I'll try and search the towns mentioned.
