Mary Daly work house Mitchelstown Co. Cork dob 08/05/1912

Hi all,

looking for some expertise please. Long story short I am looking for some information on my granny Mary Daly between the years 1912 and 1940 and her mother Mary Daly. I suspect that anything found may not be particularly cheery but testament to her tenacity. This is a period of her life unknown to all the extended family.

Information known with supporting documentation. Mary Daly born Mitchelstown work house Co. Cork 08/05/1912. Born to a Mary Daly no named father believed out of wedlock. Mary junior married John Hanlon 01/01/1940 in Galbally Co. Limerick and settled in Cahir Co. Tipperary where she raised 9 children including my father Patrick. So Mary was born in Cork, married in Limerick and raised family in Tipp.

So my quest is to find out any information about Mary Daly senior ( no known information whatsoever as Cork Archives said  all documentation pre 1916 is gone re Mitchelstown work house) I SUSPECT Mary senior may have links to Galbally but without any evidence. And more so, what happened to my granny Mary Daly junior between 1912 and 1940? I also suspect she and John Hanlon met and married after working together in Woodville House Templemore Co. Tipp. Lastly, to confuse matters more, Mary Daly also had a child out of wedlock, also called Mary Daly (Limerick?) therefore 3 generations of Mary Daly’s.

These questions appears slightly different to many others on this site as it is relatively recent but her early life was shrouded in secrecy (as was the way) Any pointers would be appreciated. Regards Emmet Hanlon

Hello,

You might research the individuals who were witnesses at the 1940 marriage. Often they are siblings or close relatives, and if so, you might be led to some family info. Good luck.

Thanks Patricia for your reply

yes that crossed my mind. Witnesses Dan Denihan and Mary Clancy. Didn’t get very far with that and as Mary Daly’s early life is such a mystery and without any info on her mum Mary Daly senior, I didn’t have anything concrete to trace them back with and link. Thanks mind

Hi

You probably have this info-

Mitchelstown Workhouse Co. Cork... - Abandoned.Ireland | Facebook

The Workhouse in Mitchelstown, Co. Cork

Could Mary have gone to the workhouse to have her baby or because she was pregnant. I searched the 1911 census and found a possibility. Johannah Condon died in 1919

Have you taken a DNA test. It might provide some family connections to Mary Daly (senior)

Still a theory- Mary Ann from the census above parents were James Daly, RIC constable, and Kate O'Gorman. The were married in 1889 and had at least 8 children in Cork. Kate died during childbirth in Kinsale, Cork in 1905 and James died in 1906. Might be why some of the children are living with their aunt in 1911.

Hi Mary TV

Thank you ever so much for your efforts. Much appreciated. Sound feasible alright..I do have one question mind. What document/link did you make linking Johanna Daly and James Daly? I am guessing you are possibly suggesting that when James Daly and Kate O’gorman both died, Johanna Condon nee Daly looked after her niece Mary. Interested to know what doc shows the link between Johanna and James Daly..appreciate it’s only a theory but thank you very much

EHanlon

I was using her son John above birth record who was on the 1911 census also. James Daly of Kinsale left his inheritance to John Condon, a farmer. I hope you can open. I assume to take care of his children.

That’s genuinely amazing Mary. Thank you. You have filled in some gaps that none of the family knew  (or certainly never discussed) I am very grateful for your assistance

EHanlon

Hopefully this is the right family. I would still do a DNA test if you haven't. When they publish the next census maybe the two Marys' lives were more positive than what you were imagining.

Take care- Mary

very true Mary. Will keep an eye out for the 1921 (if they did one) Or the 1931. Appreciate your help

Wow Mary

this all just seems to fit into place. Too many coincidences otherwise. James Daly and Kate O’Gorman married 03/03/1889 in Galbally district. Mary Anne moves in with the Condons in Mitchelstown after her mum and dad die.  (17 in 1911 census)She then has my granny Mary Daly the year after in the workhouse. (08/05/1912) And then all those years later Mary Daly and John Hanlon marry 01/01/1940 in Galbally district and settle in Cahir. As you said before my fingers are crossed that Mary Anne and Mary stuck together and maybe gravitated towards Galbally. I believe that Mary Anne remarried and Mary also had a child (Mary) out of marriage again maybe with links to Galbally….you should be a detective :) thanks for all you have done

Note James and Kate married in the District of Galbally. Kilglass is just north of Mitchelstown. Mary Daly and John Hanlon were married in the town of Galbally.

Thanks Mary

yes I suspect that was the house they both worked in. Marriage cert said Woodville for both…just a bit out of my price range unfortunately :)

EHanlon

Woodville was actually how I found this website. There was a woman on this site maybe as far back as 2015 (Anne I think) who actually said she lived at Woodville and was collating information on its history. She had set up a website www.woodville.ie but it think it is defunct now
