Mary Clarke Killaghmore Kilconnell

My mother Mary Clarke who was illegitimate was born on 27th November 1922 at Killaghmore Kilconnell. Her mother, my grandmother, was also Mary (Maud) Clarke and I know from the birth certificate that she registered the birth on 12th February 1923.

I have been unable to obtain a baptism certificate despite contacting the local church at Cappataggle.

For years I wrongly assumed that my mother had been brought up by her aunts at the family farm in Killaghmore. I now know that my Mother was brought up in a convent, but did attend Killagh School.

I have also since found out that my grandmother at the time of the 1926 census, was a servant to the Reilly family, in Woodford Co Galway. It would seem that the birth of my mother was very much covered up and, as was the norm in those times, very much frowned upon.

I would love to know what convent my Mother was taken to but I doubt there is a way of finding out. My search of the 1926 census has drawn a blank and I understand that inmates of convents were possibly listed by their initials only.

I probably need to draw a line under any chances of finding out but is there any way the baptism record might be available anywhere?

Any help gratefully received. The main reason really is to see if by any chance the name of my Grandfather is on the baptism certificate.

Hi, Can you post the birth record? It might assist us in assisting you. Thank you.

A coupIe of ideas...

It is possibIe Mary was Iiving with reIatives in 1926 but went to the convent Iater.

At her baptism, it is possibIe her father's name was given as her surname and not CIarke.

It is aIso possibIe she was born earIier than the date given on her birth cert. PeopIe had to pay a fine if they registered a birth Iate, so they sometimes Iied about the date of birth.

Thank you for your replies.

I have a copy of the 1926 census for the Clarke family and there is no entry for either Mary( Maud) Clarke or my mother Mary Clarke. Her birth record has now been added to my post.

This is a photo of my mother’s wedding in Kent in 1952. Next to my mother is Kathleen Clarke, behind her is Anna Clarke my great aunt, and in the front row is my grandmother Mary (Maud).

Sprush1:

There is a Facebook group called East Galway Genealogy and DNA https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=east%20galway%20genealogy%20%26%20dna You may want to post a message and ask what convents were in the area of Cappataggle church or near Kilconnell. You could then try to search on the 1926 census for those convents.

Thank you. I will try that.

Hi, in the late 1930s there was a folklore collection done through national schools. In Killagh school some of the stories were collected from Mrs. Clarke of Killagh and at least one was written by Mary Clarke of Killagh who was aged 14. You can contact me at kjordan@irelandxo. com if you want further information.

Best wishes, Kieran
