Martyn and Haddican families

Hi all,

Along with several other descendants, I am trying to find out more about Anne Martyn who married John Mooney in Tuam Galway on 21 August 1835. John and Anne had at least 5 children, one of whom died as a child. On some of their children's baptism certificates, Anne gave her name as Honoria. Anne is believed to have died in Ireland prior to 1858, when John and their 4 children migrated to New South Wales on the "Mary Ann". Nothing is known about Anne's family.

From DNA testing, multiple descendants of John and Anne have matches who are descended from various Haddican families.

My current line of enquiry related to a Michael Martyn who married Honoria Haddican. They had a daughter, Bridget, who was born in Tuam about 1803. Bridget married John Miskell and had several children. Several relatives have matches with a descendant of this marriage.

Margaret Martyn, born about 1810 in Galway, married Walter Haddican about 1826 in Tuam Galway. All of the relatives who have tested have multiple matches with descendants of Margaret and Walter. I am wondering if Margaret may have been a daughter of Michael Martyn and Honoria Haddican, and if our Anne may have been another daughter.

As well as descendants of Walter and Margaret Haddican, we have matches with descendants of other Haddican families from Tuam, which could indicate that we have a Haddican ancestor.

From analysis of matches, it appears that the matches are on our Martyn line, and not our Mooney line.

I have not been able to find details for any additional children born to Michael Martyn who married Honoria Haddican.

Thank you in advance,

Penny

As you likely know there is a gap with Tuam RC baptisms from July 1804 to July 1811. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1082?locale=en Likely Margaret and Anne were born in that gap period. Roots Ireland has a February 20 1800 baptismal record for a Thomas Martin with father Michael Martin and mother Honor Cadikin (as transcribed). I believe Cadikin may be your Haddican, however, I tried looking at the parish register for February 20th but could not locate the record.

Penny and Roger,

The entry for Thomas Martin is there next to 25 Feb - the last entry on the page. The mother is shown as Honor Cadikin. The sponsors are Bernard Murphy and Mary Martin.

Carolyn

Carolyn:

Thanks! I checked and there were no other children born to Michael Martin and Honor Cadikin. I think the priest did not hear the name correctly and wrote Cadikin.

Roger,

I agree with you that the name was incorrectly entered...especially given that one sponsor was Mary Martin. Of note, the sponsors for Bridget (1803) were James Martyn and Mary Martyn.

Carolyn

Not sure if you have names of descendants of WaIter and Margaret...

Thank you to all who have responded, these responses have all been helpful.

I hadn't come across any entries with the mother's maiden Cadikin/Cadikeen (or an other variations of that). As has been mentioned, this is likely a mishearing by the priest of the surname. I will keep an eye out for that in future research.

I now have baptism certificates for Margaret (1790), Thomas (1796), Thomas (1800) to add to the certificate I had for Bridget (1803), children of Michael Martin and Honor Haddican. This confirms that Margaret WAS a daughter of Michael and Honor. As most of the DNA matches that I have identified are descended from Margaret, this is a major step forward.

I have a marriage certificate for a Mary Martyn who married David Haddican in Tuam in 1822, witnesses were Patrick Tierney and Thomas Haddican. I think it may turn out that Mary is another child of Michael and Honor, whilst not conclusive, she named her first daughter Honor.

One of the witnesses for Anne Martyn and John Mooney's wedding was a Stephen Martyn. I haven't found a baptism for him, but I think he may turn out to be another child of Michael and Honor.

In relation to Margaret Martyn and Walter Haddican's children, as well as the children listed by Patricia, I have also identified Mary, Bridget, Anne, and Michael. We have DNA matches with descendants of Peter, Michael and Patrick Haddican.

Thank you again for your help with this, being able to confirm that Margaret was a daughter of Michael and Honor Martyn puts me a step closer to be being able to prove that Anne was also their daughter.

For anyone who might be interested, here is my hypothesis tree, for the first two generations.

Hi Penny.

I've just returned from a trip to Galway/Mayo/Roscommon in search of my Gleeson Haddican ancestors. I found absolutely nothing UNTIL... on the last day I visited a town called Glenamaddy which is around 8km from Tuam. The very lovely people at the Post Office suggested I meet with a farmer (who was pretty much in the middle of nowhere in a Townland called Strangefort. Townlands are parcels of land in and around a small town. It's a bit confusing at times!) I drove to the farm and met a gentleman who's mother was a Haddican. He explained that along the lane there were several Haddican families.

I'd been searching around the bigger towns of Ballyhaunis and Tuam, but I think they may have been the main centres for the reporting of births marriages and deaths. One of the key areas for Haddican families is Dunmore, Ballymoe, Glenamaddy (a Haddican died in the Glenamaddy workhouse) and Strangefort.

My Haddican family moved to England, eventually landing in Derbyshire. Edward Haddican was born in 1799 and had several children. Like most we have a Bridget, Ellen, Catherine, Mary, Patrick and John. I will happily send census details if you'd like copies.

My search continues as I can't find any connection to Edward Haddican. The curious thing was that even after visiting 14 cemetery sites in a very small area, not one Haddican or Gleeson grave was found??? I would have thought that maybe the family didn't have a great deal of money hence the move to England. On arrival they were registered as Hawkers of Mops, Cloth, etc.

Not sure if any of this helps but good luck with the search.

This site could be useful. I found plenty of Haddican references inc Martin.
