Margaret O'Donnell (Wexford - transported to Tasmania)

Kia ora from NZ

I am looking for information on my 3x-great-grandmother, Margaret O'Donnell.  She was supposedly born c1825 in Wexford, but in later court cases in Australia, claimed she was born in the US.  However, it was from Wexford that she was transported to Tasmania in 1852 for arson.  (The judge, obviously a patient and compassionate man, stated that he wished it was still a capital offence as too many people were committing the same crime so they could leave the country.)

In Tasmania, she continued to be in and out of the courts (usually for alcohol-related offences) but she also found time to marry David Ringrose in 1858.  She eventually died in NSW in 1894, being buried in a pauper's grave.

It may be a long shot, but any help much appreciated.

Robbie,

I checked RootsIreland (paid subscription) and did not find a record.

There are 88 trees on Ancestry, none have identified parents. On one I found an interesting article from 1884. She was in court (probably the one you referred to above) and said her name was Louisa Margaret Osland, born in Baltimore. US, parents- Nicholas Osland (soldier) and Catherine Douglas. I did not find any records to support this.

Thanks very much Mary.  Yeah, haven't had any luck on various ancestry sites either.  I figure if there was something, someone else would have found it by now, but just because it's impossible that's no reason not to try myself.
