Margaret Mary Garvey Born 1923

Hi Everyone..hope you can help me and my brothers trace our history. My mother Margaret Mary Garvey was born in Kilkee - County Clare in 1923. She had one sister Mary and I think 2 brothers - Jack and ? Mum moved to Australia in her early 20s and married. Apparently her parents - both Irish died early in her life. Mum did not speak about her life in Ireland and died when she was 52 in 1975. I am trying to piece together her backgroun - parents, brothers and any relatives that might still be in Kilkee? My name is Patiricia (Meg), my brothers are Ian and Cliff. Hope someone can help? It would be great to know something of her history - her parents/our grandparents.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Kilkee is in the Kilrush registration district and about a month ago the Irish government released the images of civil records back to 1864 for births and 1882 for marriages and 1891 for deaths. The site is www.irishgenealogy.ie and access is free.

I went in and looked for all Garvey births registered in the Kilrush district from 1910-1930.The only Margaret was in 1914 and her mother's maiden name was Crotty. There was only one John and his birth was in 1911 and his mother's maiden name was Russell. There was one Mary and she was alos born in 1914 and her mother's maiden name was McDonnell.

I also looked at the 1911 census and the only Garvey family was this one in a townland called Dough. Maybe the Michael in the family married and had children?

Do you have any other clues?

There are two Margaret Garvey births around the right time showing in Kilrush district on the FamilySearch BMD Index, which covers after the 1916 cut-off on the GRO/IrishGenealogy website - both in 1923 - see here. One of which seems to have died the following year. Images of these later records are not available online but you can order research certs costing €4 from the GRO - see option 1 on the Civil records homepage. You need the name, year/quarter, registration district, volume & page shown on the index records when filling in the form.

Most Australian states include parents names on marriage and/or death cert  which could to help confirm, or rule out, possible matches.

Shane:

Can you further explain the 1916 cutoff? Are you saying that there are no birth records after 1916? Thanks!

Shane:

Never mind. I went to the web site and can see that they only have until 1915 for births because of the 100 year rule. Thanks!

Thank you Roger...My brothers and I spent our early lives in an orphanage so didn't know mum very well until we left...Mum (Margaret Mary Terese Garvey) said that she was born in Kilkee so I don't have any other information than this...can I get her birth certificate?  My younger brother Cliff stayed with her sister Mary in Brentwood Essex in 1975...Cliff went to Kilkee and met many people named Garvey but could not find out any information...thank you for looking!!

Meg:

Go up to the response from Shane. His first link provides the two 1923 birth index records for Margaret Garvey births. One of them is likely your mother. Copy down the year quarter and volume and page numbers. Both are in the Kilrush registration district. Then go to Shane's 2nd link, print out the form, fill it out to the best of your ability and include:

You need the name, year/quarter, registration district, volume & page shown on the index records when filling in the form.

You will have to mail the request to Ireland but GRO can e-mail back the copies. The cost is four euros per copy.

Thanks so much Shane and Roger.  Really appreciate.  We will be visiting Ireland at the end of the year and am so excited about seeing where mum was born.   Meg
