Margaret, Maria Meaney and Lizzie Guilfoyle from Borrisokane, Tipperary

My wife's paternal grandmother, Margaret Meaney, emigrated from Borrisokane, Co Tipperary along with Lizzie Guilfoyle to Philadelphia, PA on the S.S.Waesland sailing from Queenstown, 13 April 1987. She was to live with her sister Maria, who emigrated from Borrisokane 20 Oct 1894, at 1538 Carleton St., Phila., PA and Lizzie was to live with her sister at Frankfort Place. My wife and Iwill be traveling to Ireland this Sept and Oct, 2017, stopping in Borrisokane for three days in early Oct. It would be great to find somekind of connection to Margaret and Maria. I suspect this might be your family:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Borrisokane/South_Street/1690696/

They had a daughter Maria born 13.8.1877, who might be the one who emigrated in 1894. Noted the following additional births:

Sarah 26.12.1879

Joseph 19.2.1894

John 7.8.1875

James 15.5.1882.

Patrick 12.9.1888

Helena 4.9.1890

Norah 6.9.1895

There were 11 children altogether, according to the 1911 census. Couldn’t see Margaret’s birth though.

Michael’s occupation was carpenter on the above birth certs, though by 1911 he was a publican and farmer:

Roger McDonnell - That will be great if they are family. As to "publican" what does that exactly mean?

verbod@comcast.net

A publican ran a pub.

Elwyn, IrelandXO Volunteer ☘IrelandXO Volunteer

Not necessarliy owned it but ran it. Thank you, Roger McDonnell.

Hi, Damyon and everyone else, I was asked for thid the other day via Jane, the Coordinator, not sure if you got it.

Hi Jane,

I had a look to see if I could find any people.

In the Eircom phone book most Meaney names are in the Nenagh area.
I did notice that in the 1901 and 1911 Census the family were two dwellings away from the Courthouse in Borrisokane.

I am not sure where the Courthouse was in those days but I did hear it was where the Technical College is now as this was also the Workhouse. I just rang the Garda Station in Borrisokane and she wasn't sure. I gave away my Borrisokane book to a relative in Australia so I can't check in that.
The Lizzie Gilfoyle I saw her birth and she was in Crotta which is down near Lough Derg.
Below is info for Sarah and Helena Meaney they went to the USA.

If you copy and paste the links into google you will see the actual record page.
I did check if Joseph married, he did and it says he was an ex soldier. not sure if he was in the Irish Free State army or the British Army.

I hope that is a help.

Hello Margot - I found something somewhere that led me to the idea that the Meany's lived on or near South St. I found a Griffith's Valuation Map here < http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/z/zoomifyDynamicViewer.php?myse… > South St south of Church St there is a building on that map the is marked "Petty Sessions and Bridewell" Could that have been the location of the courthouse?

verbod@comcast.net

Hi Damyon, I will be in Borrisokane on the 18th of Sept.,  I will have a look to see if the Courthouse became the Bank. I will let you know.
Margot

Copy and paste all this link below into google or any other search engine, where the red box,  zoom in until you find Number 56. South Street, on the left it says the Intended Court House. It looks like the Court at that time was on Main Street, I think it became a Bank.

If you look south, down from South Street, you will see SOUTH TERRACE. These houses are still standing. You may have to use these as a starting point.

 1Dear Tina and Dan,

I've been asked by jane, our coordinator to help you out, I'm Lulu and a volunteer on irelandxo.com

I've been looking at your family, hoping to find more information for you before your arrival.

IT looks like(as found out above) - that Margaret and Mary were daughters of Michael and Nora Meaney, South Street, Borrisokane.

From roots Ireland.ie-

Michael Meaney marriedHonora Houlihan on 12 September 1874 in Borrisokane church.

He was a carpenter, son of a Michael Meaney, carpenter. Honora's father was also a Michael

They had the following children;

John, 1875; Mary 1877; Sarah 1879; james 1882; Lizzie 1883?; margaret 1884Patrick 1888; Helena 1890; Joseph 1894; Nora  1895;Michael 1896;

John marries and has children in Borrisokane, from 1911 census

By 1911, Michael is a publican- whereas I haven't confirmed as yet (still looking)- perhaps they lived at what is now known as the Green Bar, - that seems to be situated at what was the fair green

I found the following deaths, who I presume were Michael Meaney parents-

Michael Meaney died in 1883 aged 84. He was a carpenter, died in Borrisokane. Sarah Meaney died 1877 in Borrisokane.  If you would like to contact me on monsea@irelandxo.com, we could meet up when you are in Borrisokane

Hi, I have been trying to get into this thread, things are being updated on the site. I had to wai for someone to post a message.
I spoke to a cousin in the USA and he said the Courthouse was where the Technical College is now. All this row of buildings were part of the Workhouse. He isn't sure of the year but that's what he remembers.
As you go through the town, at the bridge turn right on the Birr road, you will see the sign for the Technival College, turn left and it's down there Kileen I think the area is called.

My name is Richard Thompson and I am the grandson of Sarah Meaney of Borrisokane. My grandmother Sarah was in Ireland in 1901 as she was listed on the Census page of that year. She moved to Philadelphia sometime after that and married my grandfather in Philadelphia. I am not sure of when they were married, but my father was born in Philadelphia in 1912 so it had to be a year or so before. I am trying to locate a record of the marriage from Philadelphia. If you could locate any information regarding how and when Sarah came to the USA, I would be very grateful. It would also be interesting to contact Tina and Dan Verbo, if you might have their e-mail. They created the original request for information on Margaret Meaney who was the sister of my grandmother.

Richard Thompson

Hi Richard,
I have found the record for arrival in the USA. Also the marriage record.
May I ask your Grandfather was he Irish or American?
Margot

Margot- Richard Thompson reached out to me. Last year when Tina and I visited Lulu Bergin was most helpful and provided us with over 70 pages of Meaney info. I will share that with Richard Thompson plus the info I have collected on my own. This forum is extremely helpful and the people working in Ireland to make it helpful are selfless with their efforts. I salute all those involved. Thank you all.

Margot,

As to my grandfather, I do not know very much about him. I do not know for sure  if he was Irish or American.  Both my parents are now deceased and there is no one to ask.

Can you give me a copy of the marriage record.

My personal e-mail is thompsonintl@verizon.net

Thanks,

Richard Thompson

Hi

I realise I am quite late to this thread, but I seen in your message title you mention a Lizzie Guilfoyle from Borrisokane. I have come across Lizzie Guilfoyle myself during my research. I know she moved to the US - philadelphia (the immigration record is in this thread). She married Richard Burgess in 1907 and 5 children with him, before her untimely death in 1912. Quite a few members of both the Guilfoyle and Burgess families (both from Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary) emmigrated to the US, some to Philadelphia.

I'm just wondering if you knew any connection between Borrisokane and Philadelphia?

My great-grandmother - Nora Smith was also from Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary (1879-1950). I believe she married Richard Burgess (the same Richard Burgess as above) in 1930 in Philadelphia. I have found united states census information about Richard Burgess & Lizzie Guilfoyles family in the US, including his immigration record in 1905. In the 1930 US census, he is living in Philadelphia with his sister Margaret Burgess, and 3 of his children. I believe, he married Nora Smith sometime after the 1930 census and before his death in April 1931.

The thing is I can't find any record of Nora Smith living in Philadelphia, or emigrating to the US. She returns back home to Borrisokane at some stage, not sure when but before her death in 1950. I have looked at some immigration records but I havent found any immigration record for her. Just wondering if you may have come across it during your search/know anything more about the irish people from Borrisokane who moved to Philadelphia

All the best

Eliza

elizabethsmith…

Hi everyone,

I am obviously coming to the conversation very late but have only recently joined Irelandxo.  Lizzie Guilfoyle that is mentioned in this post is my great aunt.  My grandfather James Guilfoyle, was her brother.

Eliza (Lizzie) first arrived in America as has been stated in this thread in 1897 aboard the SS Waesland to live with her sister Bridget who had arrived 2 years earlier.  At some stage Eliza returned to Borrisokane and on 28 May 1905 arrived back in Philadelphia aboard the SS Merion, together with her brother James and some other young people from Borrisokane, including her future husband Richard Burgess and a Phillip Reilly who listed Bridget (Guilfoyle) McNamara as his cousin.  As has been noted, Eliza married Richard Burgess in 1907.

To Eliza, great-granddaughter of Nora Smith, who posted in reply above, I was very excited to read your post above and would love to connect with you directly.  As you say, there is a very strong link between Borrisokane and Philadelphia.  In addition to Lizzie, her sisters Bridget, Anne and brothers James, Michael and Martin also migrated to Philadelphia.  Her brother Martin seems to be the first to have made the move, arriving in 1892.  We have found that an uncle of Lizzie etc from there mother's side, John McLeod, had moved to Philadelphia in the 1880s.  I guess it is reasonable to think that the Guilfoyle's followed their uncle to US??

I would love to hear from anyone who has connections with this thread.
