Margaret Kenna ne Sullivan? c1810-1874

Youghalarra (Tipperary)

Hi All
I am researching an ancestor who was transported to Van Diemens Land under the name of Margaret Kenna. I believe Kenna to be her married name and from information in prison records that her birth surname may have been Sullivan. Margaret was a widow by the time she left Ireland in 1852 but she gave her late husband's name as Patrick Kenna.

A fellow researcher has recently discovered a marriage of a Margaret Sullivan to a Patrick Kenna in the parish of Youghalarra as follows:

Patrick Kenna of Ogunnelly married Margaret Sullivan of Coome on 19 February 1828. Their witnesses were Patrick McDonnell and John McDonnell, both of Pallas More.

This couple appear to have had the following children:

Thomas bap Youghalarra 1830

Mary bap Youghalarra 1832

John bap Nenagh 1835

Patrick bap Youghalarra 1838

Michael bap Nenagh 1840.

I would be delighted to hear from anyone else descended from or researching this family in an attempt to confirm the Sullivan birth name hypothesis.

It is known that the convict Margaret Kenna had 5 children at the time she was transported and we have the names of 4 of them: Mary, Patrick and Michael plus her youngest, Daniel b c 1847 from whom  I am descended.

Margaret Kenna was convicted & sentenced to 7 years transportation at the Nenagh Assizes in 1851 (not a first offence!) Other information about her is that she had a brother Michael and sister Anne who remained in Ireland and two other sisters Mary and Catherine who had emigrated to 'America' before 1852. If these were all Sullivans that might trigger something somewhere!

Best regards

In the first newspaper clip I see there is a Patrick Kenna transported for 10 years for cow stealing.

Tassiegirl - do you mind me asking if you have done your DNA and if so have you had any success finding family in Ireland.

Hi Geraldine

Thanks for those extracts. It's very likely the first one (which I hadn't seen before) from the Nenagh Guardian relates to the right Margaret.

It more or less matches one of the several occasions a Margaret Kenna of the right age was held in the Nenagh Prison - on this occasion charged with stealing geese - with a co-offender Mary O'Brien whose name appears next to hers in the newspaper report. I presume the trial was held in Thurles rather than Nenagh as it was the next convenient sitting of the Quarter Sessions.

The Patrick Kenna transported for cow stealing also ended up in Van Diemen's Land but at 21 in 1851 (when he arrived in VDL) he is too young to have been Margaret's husband and two old to have been her son. His convict record indicates his mother's name was Hanora & gives the names of siblings if there is anyone out there tracking other branches of the Tipperary Kennas.

I would be surprised if the Clonmel record is 'my' Margaret as it would be a long way out of area. Besides, there are quite enough potential matches in Nenagh prison records to make an offender record of some magnitude!

I haven't taken an DNA test but my fellow researcher (also a descendant) has which has turned up some promising matches especially with Ogunnelly.

Cheers

Hi TassieGirl,

I'm a direct descendant of Margaret Kenna. Her son, Daniel is my great, great Grand Father who lived in the Woodsdale area and was married to Rhoda Ruth Ransley. I've done quiet a bit of research and tried to send a message already to you prior to joining (silly me) so I'm not going to type all the info again if this doesn't get through. I know Margaret remarried in Tasmania to William Leper. She was also 2 more charged and spent time in Richmond Gaol before getting her Ticket of Leave. Hope this helps and do contact if you want. Thanks Brett Kenna

Hi Brett

Thanks for your message. Just seeing if I can reply to it - Ireland XO is a bit mystifying at times.

Well that worked, hooray!

I've spent many a year researching Margaret & Daniel in Tasmania so we probably have similar information unless you have access to any stories handed down your side of the family?

And of course if you have any information on the Irish end (again from non-published sources) I would be delighted to hear about it.

You can contact me direct at lisa.hutton@terroir.st

Cheers

Dear Lisa,

Thanks for your reply. I'm sure we do have much of the same information on Margaret/Patrick/Daniel Kenna. I'm still trying to

find more details of Margaret's family history in Ireland and will let you know if I find anything interesting. I did find information on 3 Patrick

Kenna's ( one probably married to Margaret in Ireland). Most likely farm labourer, breaking and burglary, 1847 ship the Tory 11/11/1846 and

another possibility Murderer - 99 years departed Ireland on Orator 12/8/1843 and arrived 21/11/1843. Possibilities. I do know from the records

at the Female Factory at Cascades that Margaret was tried a number of times for stealing, but at her 3rd trial was convicted and sentenced

to 7 years. Not sure if any of this is useful. Will keep searching.  Cheers Brett Kenna

Hi Lisa,

Just wanted to touch base about your research into Margaret Kenna. From what I gather you have much more information on her history and have also hit a wall when trying to go further back into her and Patrick Kenna's past in Ireland. Will keep trying.

Not sure if you are interested and know of one of the stories about the Kenna/Rowlands family, as you have indicated you have a great deal of information on Daniel Kenna up until the present. Margaret Kenna's great grandson - Ernest Edward Kenna (my grandfather) was married to Myra Alice Rowlands of Woodsdale. One of her older brothers, who she greatly looked up to for support, was Kenneth James Rowlands. It's a fascinating story that has only recently come to light. Kenneth aged round 30 disappeared around the same time as Ina Marjory Kitchen, 17. Kenneth was in-fact married and no-one in the family knew what happened to him, other than a note left at the front gate on his bike, saying to sell it and pay and bills owning. It was only years later after research that it was discovered that he changed his name to Eric James Fleming and was living in Victoria. The current Fleming family, started by Kenneth/Eric own the largest nursery in Victoria, if not Australia. They even won the major award at the Chelsea Garden Show held in London a few years ago. The story is available in a book called "Beyond Their Wildest Dreams" written/researched by Jenny Mountstephen. There are a number of pages dedicated to the Kenna family.

You maybe aware already of this book and it's story of some of our ancestors. If not, I can pass onto you I'm sure some of the relevant information. I know the book is available for purchase on-line.

Hope this is something you didn't know and could be interested in. It is an amazing story.

Thanks Brett Kenna

PS I did try your e-mail address, but couldn't send through the above information. Will try one more time. Cheers Brett

Brett Kenna

Thanks Brett, an amazing story indeed. And your other email has made it through thanks.

Cheers
