Margaret Cunningham from Tome, parents Mary Clancy and James Cunningham

Hello, Patrick Clancy married Margaret Brassil in Tulla on 2 March 1835 and they had seven children. Their sons James, Michael, Denis and John and their daughters Joanna and Bridget all came to Australia. The youngest daughter Mary, stayed in Ireland and married James Cunningham on 9 Feb 1875 and lived on the townland of Tome and (what I believe) to be Laccaroe, now Lecarrow North, next to Tome). Of their children, Michael, Mary, Patrick and James all died without children, and Patrick came to Australia.  However, I cannot find any trace of Margaret, who was born in 1876.  Does anyone know what happened to Margaret?  Also happy to accept any queries about any of the family mentioned above, or their descendants.  Regards, Jenny Bowden

Hi Jenny -

Please accept my apologies, but I am having trouble finding this family in Ireland.  Can you give me some additional information.  I cannot find the marriage record in 1835 for Patrick Clancy and Margaret (Peg) Brassil.  They may have married in the bride's parish which may be another place, but I don't see a marriage in County Clare.  I see James Clancy baptised on 11 Jul 1836 in Tulla, Killaloe Diocese and Johanna Clancy baptised 22 Feb. 1847, also in Killaloe Diocese.  But I cannot find the other children baptismal records.  Can you give me an idea what year they emigrated to Australia and what area they emigrated in Australia.

Another mystery is the marriage of Margaret born in 1876, which is quite late in the marriage considering the other children were known to be born in the 1836 and 1847.

Let me know if I can be of additional assistance.

Hi Marsha, my deepest apologies for not replying to your kind response to your my message. It's one of those things that have gone by the wayside and fallen through the cracks.  I'll go through my records to find the documents to clarify for you what information I've got. (I can include some of them now).  The numbers at the start of the document names only refer to my own numbering sysems.

In response to your query about the marriage of Margaret is that we may have got the generations mixed up.

Mary Clancy was the daughter of Patrick Clancy and Margaret Brassil married in 1835 (see Parish register attached).

Mary Clancy married James Cunningham in 1875 (see Parish Register - about third last entry from bottom of page)

Margaret was the daughter of James and Mary Cunningham - it is Margaret whom I'm trying to trace.

I thank you in advance for any further assistance. It is very much appreciated.  I will post some more on this family in due course.

More to the above on the Cunningham family

James Cunningham son of Michael Cunningham and Sheragh Shea, born c1852, Ardboulla, Tulla, County Clare, died aged 34 yeatrs, April 1889, Thome (or Tome), from phthisis (TB).

Mary Cunningham (nee Clancy), died 2 July 1938 aged 83 years (breast cancer). Laccaroe is given as the location, it is sometimes translated as Lacharne,. I believe it to be the modern Lecarrow North - modern name of a townland adjoining Thome.

Their children:

Margaret Cunningham, born 2 May 1876, Thome Baptised 6 May 1876, Thome.....no further information

Michael Cunningham, born 21 Oct 1878, Thome, Baptised 22 Oct 1878, died aged 22 years 1 March 1900 Tulla, phthisis

Mary Cunningham born 27 April 1883, Thome, Baptised 30 April 1883, died 17 May 1900 aged 17 years, Tulla, phthisis

Patrick Cunningham born 21 Jul 1884, Thome, emigrated to Sydney Australia, 1913, Married Margaret Walsh in Sydney in 1917. No known children. Margaret died in 1943 in Sydney and Pat died 1953 in Sydney.

James Cunningham born 13 Jan 1888, Thome, died 12 Dec 1931 Laccaroe (as above), no known marriage or children.

From the five children of James Cunningham and Mary Clancy, there appears to have been no grandchildren, except possibly for Margaret - if she can be found.

If anybody wishes me to share any documentation, please let me know.

Regards

Jenny Bowden
