Manus Diamond

Hello,

I’m after any possible info on an ancestor of mine called Manus Diamond. He moved to Australia in 1850 after having lived in Londonderry. I have documentation on him since he arrived in Australia but nothing prior. His parents’ names were Charles Diamond and Sarah Slamon. When it comes to Manus’ date of birth I have three pieces of documentation with conflicting information. He is variously recorded as being born in 1822, 1832 and 1835.

I will be visiting Derry at the end of next month so thought I’d make this last ditch effort to see if I can find out any info before I leave.

Elisabeth

A word of caution if you intent to visit the Charles Diamond grave on Church Island. It is on an island for part of the year as the name suggests and is often difficult to access except in summer. If the River Bann is high the path is often flooded. You normally need wellington boots to visit the island.

The Charles Diamond who is buried there probably lived in Ballydermot which is just a few hundred yards from Church Island. He would almost certainly have been a farmer. This may be him in the 1831 census:

Looking at the 1901 census for Co Derry there were 10 people named Charles Diamond/Dimond in the county so the name was probably equally common in the 1830s. So no guarantee this is the right one.
