Maher surname in Kilbannon, Tuam

Hello Friends,

I am enlisting your assistance or guidance in locating another member of my family.  My great grandfather was James Maher,  born 24/6/1869 in Kilbannon, Co. Galway. I believe this to be in the Tuam parish, as my Nanny told me such.  His parents were Peter Maher and Catherine Concannon.  His older brother was also named Peter Maher, and went on to become a pugilist and Ireland's heavyweight Champion. Jem had two other brothers;  Michael, born 1864 in Rinvyle and Patrick, born 1865.  It is believed the family moved to the Mountbellew area where his sisters were born; Mary on 18/6/1872 and Catherine in 1874 ( she passed in 1875).  James Maher moved to Dublin with his parents and siblings.  He set off for America prior to 1900.  He married a young woman named Bridget Gaffey (whom I am also searching for) from New Bridge, Co. Galway.  If you can point me in the direction that I might find birth records for James or a marriage certificate for Peter Maher and Catherine Concannon, it would be most helpful.   Any assistance or guidance, I would be most grateful for.  Please call upon me if you require assistance in locating your ancestors in the US...I would be happy to help.

Thank you kindly.  Kimberly.

I was unable to locate a Kilbannon but I did look for birth index records in the Tuam registration district and there was a James Maher record for 1869 which I assume is your relative. If you want a copy of this record, you need to contact the GRO. Go to the link below and hit the link for birth records in English. You may get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. Hit cancel and the form should come up. Fill out the form. Make sure you ask for a copy of the record which should cost around 4 euros. Also provide the year of birth, registration district and the volume and page number ( 14 and 589). You can ask the GRO to e-mail the copy to you.

Hello Roger,

Once again, you have been very helpful to me.  With your guidance, I was able to dig a bit further and found, not only James Maher, but his siblings and both parent's names!  Thank you ever so much :)

Hi Kimberly,

I had understood from my own (limited, boxing-related) research that the great boxer Peter Maher was from Gunnode townland outside Mountbellew (Killian civil parish).  Is that not correct? Here's a good link http://places.galwaylibrary.ie/asp/fullresult.asp?id=21199.

Hi Kimberly,

My grandfather was Michael Maher born in Rinvyle Galway in 1864. His parents ware Peter Maher and Catherine Concannon. He set up a dairy farm in Glasnevin Dublin. My father was named James after his uncle James.  There is a book written about Peter Maher, if you have not already read it, it is by Matt donnellon called The Irish Champion Peter Maher.
