Mackinac Murray Family

I am looking for information regarding my 3x great grandfather, Patrick Murray. He and his brother emigrated to Mackinac Island, MI in the 1840-50 Patrick Murray was born in Newport, Co Mayo. His brothers are Dominick, David, and Michael. His father was Patrick Murray. I have been looking for information on them in Newport for quite a while, I found a relative in Newport he is a Chambers and they intermarried a bit. I am getting worried about 1. ever finding information on their lives in Ireland and 2. My relative told me that no matter what I find out about them I was to be reassured that they were good hardworking people. That just makes me even more interested! I always admired a rebel, even if it was just to feed your family!!

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, RC records for that parish do not start until 1872 so no baptismal/marriage records would be available.

I checked the Tithe listings and there were a good number of Murrays in the parish including four Pat Murray records although some could be duplicates.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for the parish also has more than ten Murray records. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/mayo/burrishoole.htm

Thank you so much for the information. I have been running into that problem myself alot.  Is there a way to work backwards from the Murrays in 1872? My family names include Mulchrone, Chambers

Update on Mackinac Murrays

This is the history so maybe we can get more info from different parishes?

Mary Maloney and Patrick Murray were from Leitrim and had David Murray in 1809, David married Catherine Mulchron, her father Charles Mulchrone was from Derrada and his wife Mary O Malley was from Kilmeena.     Mary Maloney was born in 1790 in Skergaugh, her father was Michael Maloney from Swineford and mother Margaret Bourke was as well.   I'm not sure what these names mean? Are they towns? roads?  Ive read that the home parish was Tuam, Burrishole and another I cant remember. I understand that parish records didnt start until 1872, but are there newspapers or even events, jail rosters, etc....

I'm confused. Your original message said that Patrick Murray was from Newport Co. Mayo. I assume Mary Maloney was his wife? Now you indicate that Patrick was from Co. Leitrim? Can you clarify?

Derradda is a townland in Burrishoole civil parish.Skerdagh Lower and Skerdagh Upper are also townlands in Burrishoole civil parish. Burrishoole parish is in West Mayo. Shrule is a village and civil parish in Co. Mayo near the Co. Galway border a good distance from Burrishoole.

Swinford is a town in East Mayo again a good distance from Burrishoole.

The home RC parish (St. Patrick's) is Newport. Newport is one of the many RC parishes in the Archdiocese of Tuam which is actually in Co. Galway.

Let me know what questions you have..

Thank you for the info, I wondered what all the names were about.  The first Patrick was born in Leitrim that would be Patrick from Newport grandfather. This all info I've gotten off ancestry, I am so confused it is crazy. I have traced the line from my father back three times.  Problems are that everyone was Patrick, David or Michael over and over again.  I also have on Ancestry that two of my 3x great uncles went to California for the gold rush (super cool) and married(?) another woman and had children with her the other was in New York during the civil war and married a woman and had children with her? Both were already married is this common?  Is there another way to trace all this so I can maybe cross reference? Any help would be amazing.  Why would the family go so far out to get married?  I have so many questions. Its crazy

Hello not sure if you are still looking for this information about your Murray ancestors, but my ancestor is Catherine Murray (1780 to 1861),from Derrada Newport Ireland.  She was married to Michael O'Malley who died on Mackinac Island (he was the father of my 2 x great grandfather John O'Malley and also the more famous Charles O'Malley).  It seems Catherine Murray died in Ireland and not Mackinac but I am not sure?  The O'Malley's remained on the island and started many of the businesses there.
