Loughrea Plovers

GalwayLoughrea (Galway)

Hello,
I thought I had already posted this query here, but it doesn't show up, so I guess not.

I am searching for the parents of William PLOVER, born 1837, who emigrated to America in 1855. His naturalization record says that he came from Co. Galway, and I have found a William PLOVER in Loughrea, who died in 1848. I really hope this is his father, but I have found nothing else to confirm that.

I did find an Honor Plover, born around the same time as my William (a sibling perhaps?), who was in jail for public drunkenness in Loughrea (I don't remember when), and a Thomas Plover, who was a baker in Loughrea in the 1850's or '60's. (Again, I don't remember the exact year...)

Oh, and someone else was pretty sure that almost every Plover she's run across was in Loughrea...

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I followed Liam's lead, I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland from 1832-1842 in East Galway for any Plower baptismal records. Only two came up both in Carrabane RC parish just to the west of Loughrea RC parish. I also did a similar search for Plover baptismal records and 22 came up and 20 of the 22 were in Carrabane RC parish. In both searches, I did nor find a William Plover or Plower.

I looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for civil parishes to the west of Loughrea and found that Kilconicky ciivl parish had seven Plover records. So I would focus my search in that area/parish. Also, none of the Carrabane baptismal records had a father named William. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/kilconickny.htm

I would also add William's story to our XO Chronicles site and maybe someone will see a connection https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

Have you considered DNA testing?

Thank you, Liam and Roger, for the help.
Yes, I'm sure it was Plover and not Plower - at least the very record since he left Ireland (the ship manifest) shows him as PLover, and he's been Plover on everything else since then...
I will add William to the XO Chronicles site - I didn't think I could since I really don't know much about him, and have no photo...
As for DNA testing, it's out of my budget, and I am very leery of having that personal info out there, knowing that many other organizations will have access to it. It would be wonderful to know, though! (Oh, and another reason it wouldn't work for me with this particular ancestor is that he is not mine, but my husband's, and neither he nor his mother would ever be willing to do DNA testing...)

Again, thank you so much!
