Looking for Thomas Ussher information

Hello,

I'm looking to find some more information on a great, great, great grandfather. His name was Thomas Ussher and he was born around 1804. I know that he married Euphemia Sophia Reilly in Dublin in 1838. They had at least 4 children; William Percival b. 1838, Rebecca Maria b. 1840, Sophia Louisa b. 1840 and Alica Richarda b. 1844. I am a descendent of William who came to Boston around 1870.

I don't know where Thomas was born or died and only know about their marriage through ancestry.com.

I'd love to know from where this branch of my family came from. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Janet

I can find baptisms for two of their children William Percival 2nd September 1838 (IrishGenealogy) in St. Werburgh's Church of Ireland, and for Rebecca Maria on the 4th December 1840 at St. Nicholas Within Church of Ireland parish. These parishes were adjacent and both in Dublin South City close to Dublin Castle and Christ Church Cathedral.

The later baptism includes a little more detail, with an address at 57 Back Lane, which is off High Street and is the location of Tailor's  Hall (Archiseek.com)  which is a medieval Guild Hall built back in the early 1700s and still survives. Thomas' occupation is shown as a writing Clerk on Rebecca's baptism, although the address is shown as a Thomas Usher Provision Dealer in the street listing for Back Lane in (SWilson.info - left page, middle column, towards the end) in Pettigrew and Oulton's Dublin City Directory of 1840.

What's the source of the possible 1838 marriage you mentioned for Thomas and Euphemia - does if look like a primary record or it possibly an estimate, does this mention a parish or church ?

I don't see any sign of a marriage for Thomas and Euphemia in the Dublin City parish records on the IrishGenealogy website, which might suggest they married outside the city...

Thomas Ussher and Euphemia Sophia Reilly were married 09 April 1837 in Dublin. They were married by John George Frederick Schulz. He was considered to be a "couple beggar." Schulz skirted Canon Law and married couples with no questions asked. He is reported to have married over 6000 couples. He recorded the marriage of Thomas and Euphemia in his own record book. FHL microfilm 101771.

Euphemia died 10 June 1871 of bronchitis. She died in Dublin. Thomas died 17 December 1873, also in Dublin. They were very involved with Drumcondra Church (COI), Dublin. Thomas worked there as the sexton. They lived in a cottage on the grounds. A visit showed that if they were buried in the churchyard, the graves are unmarked. The cottage has been knocked down. The church is still functioning.

Hi Debbie yes that's me.  I'm sorry I have took so long to return to this. One of Thomas and euphemia granddaughter moved to New York and eventually opened an apple farm which is still in the family today passed down to generations. I got in tough with one of the her great grandchildren and they were kind enough to send me a diary extract and old photos that belonged to Alice Conner (the granddaughter of Thomas) now we are uncertain if the photos are of her parents Alice and George or if they are actually old enough to be Thomas and Euphemia.  But the lady does share a likely resemblance to my aunt.  I would be happy to share these photos with you I think they may be of Thomas daughter Alice if I'm honest.

If there are any documents you would be willing to share I'm back on the trail now and going to go through all my findings again to see of anything new pops up.  It's crazy to think that we are all related somehow.  I'm doing this for my mother her grandmother was named Euphemia sophia Connor and her gray mother was Alice ( early records show her name to be Alicia Richarda Usher)

Thanks

Sharon

Hello Sharon,

I am intrigued with the information about the apple farm in NY. Where in NY was the farm? I would love to see the diary and photos. Depending upon the style of photo, it is possible to date them. Euphemia died in 1871 and Thomas in 1873.

I have made my tree public on Ancestry. I have visited Ireland and walked in our ancestors footsteps and taken photos of places. Much of the info I have is posted on my tree. Perhaps you could take a look there and then we can talk. I will PM you through Ancestry.

Yes, we are related. I share DNA with June M., as do you. The Usshers were an illustrious line. Thomas's ancestors and his lateral line incluce one of the founders of Trinity College, the first National Astronomer of Ireland, Henry Ussher (my 4th GGF). There's an Ussher's Quay in Dublin and so on.
