Looking for Rogans

My ancestor Edward Rogan and his wife Bridget Flynn were tenant farmers in this county around the 1830 -40 timeframe. One son John William left Ireland and immigrated to the US in the 1860s and married Bridget Reilly and had our first generation American born Rogan. I'm looking for any information on Edward Rogans parents or other relatives.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Can you clarify what county Edward and Bridget lived in? Is this the baptismal record for John William Rogan?

Yes that is the correct Baptism record.  The catholic parish is Ballina, the civil parish is Kilmoremoy in the counties of Sligo and Mayo.  They farmed the land as a family, Edward/Bridget and their sons John William, Edward and James. John William went to the US in the late 1850s and settled in Pennsylvania is and our Great Great Great Grandfather.  We would love to reconnect to any family in Ireland as we have not been able to identify Edwards parents to continue the research. Thank you for your help.

The Kilmoremoy records start in 1823. I'm going to contact our parish liaison for North Mayo and see if has any comments or suggestions.

Thanks for your help.  We've been to the library in Dublin and the LDS Library in Salt Lake, no one has any records for baptisms before 1800.  So I was hoping perhaps a "Rogan" in the area might have some suggestions.  Baptism record for Edward is the only thing I can think of that would have his parents names.  I'm really just trying to find any relations still in Ireland.  Edward had 3 sons, John William (my ancestor), James and Edward.  From what I can tell James and Edward remained in Ireland but John William went to the US>

GREETINGS FROM ONTARIO, CANADA

I am descended from Ann Rogan (1799) who left Ireland in 1842 with her five children. She settled in Ontario, Canada which is where I live.

I have been researching her parents and siblings. The oral history is the family was from Easkey Parish in Sligo.

I have found her brothers lived in the Parishes of Easkey, Kilglass and Castleconnor.

I gave posted previously on this message board. You will find a lot of information in these postings.

A lot of people left Ireland, and settled in the area of Scanton, Pennsylvania. An excellent source is From Sligo to Scranton. It's a free online book.

Hello Diane and Liz-   My name is Pete Rogan from Minnesota, US.  My Rogans came from County Mayo in mid 1800s.  Settled in Saratoga Springs NY for 3-5 years, returned to Mayo in 1845.  They came back to US in 1847- NY for about a year, Boston for a year, and then Ohio for 6-12 months.  They eventually settled and lived their lives out in Dodge County, WI.  James Rogan and Nancy (Ann) Kearney Rogan. James' father was Bartholomew Rogan.  Nancy's obit says she is from "near Killala" and many Kearney DNA matches are in Lacken.  We thought the Rogans might be from Lacken- but we also have hints they could be from Ballina.  Just putting this out there- in case there are any connections!  Thanks - Pete

Hi Liz

I now know so much more about the Rogans than when I last posted to this site..l

It's my hypothesis your Edward is a Brother to my 3RD Great Grandmother Ann Rogan (1799).

Ann left County Sligo in 1842 and settled in Ontario, Canada.

Edward Rogan (abt.1800) left Ireland and went to Scotland abt. 1850 but later returned to Ireland.

One son John immigrated to Pennsylvania as you say.

Hi Pete!

See my posts above one recent, and one today. I did not know about a Bartholomew Rogan.

I have however seen records for Rogans in Wisconsin.

This was a big family that lived in Kilmermoy Parish in County Sligo.

The border between Sligo and Mayo changed at one point with some of southern Sligo absorbed into County Mayo.  It was shown in the records as Counties Mayo and Sligo.

Do you have any dates for your Rogan Ancestors mentioned above?

My 3RD Great Grandmother Ann Rogan (1799) left Ireland with her family and settled in Ontario, Canada.

I know the names of her parents.  Have records.

It was a big family.

Diane,

My apologies for a slow reply.

When I posted above, I mentioned James Rogan, his father Bartholomew Rogan, and Nancy Rogan (nee Kearney) - James's wife.

Here are dates we are aware of for all three:

James Rogan
birth - 15 Jan 1808 - County Mayo, Ireland
death - 11 Nov 1880 - Ashippun, Dodge County, Wisconsin, USA
wedding to Nancy -1838, Ireland
Naturalization Registration (possible) - 30 Jan 1851, Boston, MA, USA
Children - Katherine, Martin, Michael, Bartholomew, Mary, Margaret, James Jr, Anthony B, Nellie

Bartholomew Rogan
birth - abt. 1785, County Mayo, Ireland
death - unknown
children - James (1808), Anthony (1810)

Nancy Rogan (nee Kearney)
birth - 24 April, 1818, Killala, County Mayo, Ireland
death - 24 Sep 1880 - Ashippun, Dodge County, Wisconsin, USA
wedding to James - 1838, Ireland

Let us know if this allows you to make some connections. We are always happy to talk more and discuss possible connections. Our biggest questions go back to Ireland - Bartholomew's wife, where did they live when James was born, any other family further back than Bartholomew, etc.

Thanks,

-Pete Rogan

Hello Pete:

I have just received your reply today Feb 24. Good to hear from you!

I want to go over the Rogans and digest what you previously wrote. I will get back to you as soon as I can.

I will bring you up to date on the information I have.

The Rogans were a large family.  The parents were Patrick Rogan and Ann Rogan. I refer to Ann as Ann Sr  as she had a Daughter Ann Rogan (1799). I dont know Ann Rogan Sr.'s maiden name. I have a Ireland Buriel Register for both Patrick and Ann Rogan.

I will tomorrow give you the birth and death dates for Patrick and Ann. I found those in RootsIreland. Will reply further as soon as I can after I have digested all previous correspondence.

Pete

I'm just wondering if our connection  goes back one Generation further.

It is my hypothesis Bartholomew Rogan 1789 was a Brother to my Direct Ancestor Patrick Rogan 1769.

Liz and I agree on Edward Rogan's Descendants and where they settled in the U.S.

I think your Rogans however go back a Generation as I said.

Bartholomew Rogan could not be the Son of Patrick (1769) and Ann Rogan (1778) based on the dates.

Anyway that is what I am thinking after taking a quick look.

Will do a deep dive tomorrow.

Diane

Patrick Rogan 1767-1839

Ann Rogan 1776-1845

From Select Ireland Catholic Deaths and Burial Registers (RootsIreland)

I also found your Tree on Ancestry and have inputed Bartholomew Rogan (1789) and his Descendants.

I actually checked and already had Bartholomew and his two Sons in a hanging Tree as I did not know how he was connected. I also have his date of birth 1789.

Good to know there were Rogans in Wisconsin. Did not know that.

I am Descended from Ann Rogan Carolan 1767. She came as a young widow with four children to Ontario, Canada in 1842.

Ann had many Brothers and one Sister. Some stayed in Ireland but many left.

They mainly went to the United States except Edward Rogan mentioned earlier in this thread who went to Scotland but later in life returned to Ireland. One of his Sons later immigrated to the United States.

Diane

I also have other Brothers for Bartholomew and Patrick. All I found in RootsIreland.

Dianne, sorry I'm just now reading your info. I'd love to get information on Patrick and Ann who I believe were Edwards parents. You said James stayed in Scotland, I'd be curious if his descendants still live in Scotland. Regards Edwards third son, any idean where he ended up (Edward Jr). Also, I'm going back to Ireland in Sep this year and would still like to find a relation still there.
