Looking for O'Steen

Looking for anyone with surname of O'Steen. Past research shows family may possibly have come from Co Cork but during a recent visit to Ireland I found that there is a town of Ballysteen in Co Limerick on the south shore of River Shannon.  The earlist known ancestor we can find is Henry O'Steen who would have been born around 1700 probably in or near North Carolina, USA.  While in the heritage office at Bunratty Castle I was told they have record of the O'Steen name but that it is very rare.  I'd like to establish who came to America, when they came, and where exactly they came from.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

You are correct O'Steen is very uncommon, but the name Steen has been recorded since early 1600 /1700 in Ireland, mostly in the more Northern counties of Ireland.

Most church records in Ireland start around 1800 and civil registration did not take place till 1864, meaning that we are mainly depending on the church records. If Henry was born around 1700 in NC his parents were more then likely part of the early settlers there.  Did you find any important records about his life in NC ? They might reveal a bit more information

It is even possible that they were part of the Scots-Irish settlers in North Carolina as in the earlier year mostly Scots-Irish settled in NC while the majority of Irish emigrants arrived much later in NC.

Do you know if they were protestant or Catholic ? Let me know what information you have that could be helpfull, where did they settle for example.

I have found that Henry O'Steen was born in Craven, NC in 1699.  His father, Charles O'Steen, was born in Ireland about 1675 and Charles' father was Daniel E.  Daniel may have spelled the last name as O'Stien.  I am still searching for where Charles lived but there are a lot of records for O'Steens in the Craven, NC area.  Given Charles' and Henry's birth years, it can be assumed that Charles came to NC from Ireland in the last quarter of the 1600's.  I have not been able to find any documents from NC nor do I know if he was Catholic or Protestant.  Oddly enough, I will be moving to NC in the near future due to a job change.  Once there, I may have more resources.  Thanks for your assistance.

Hello, my name is Robert O'steen and I recently took a DNA test and thought the results may be of interest to you since I believe my branch of the family to be related to the very same Henry O'steen. My haplogroup is Rm222 which is the Irish "modal" haplogroup, which is cool since I've always had folks say they thought the name was of German descent

I have done a lot of research on Henry O'Steen (Osteen) in North Carolina. I  have never found a document that says he was born in 1699 Craven NC.  If someone has that I would love to see the document.  There is one document in Carteret Co., NC referring to Henry Osteen.  My line is John O'Steen that married Ada Weeks.  I have lots of information and documents for this line.  Happy to share.  email is Doom at elpasotel.net

Hey there, I am Rowan C. O'Steen, from the Irish family O'Steen, we moved to America from Ireland ~three generations ago; My descendant who moved to America from Ireland was formerly in the Irish mafia as a hitman and we left to basically run away from them. The name was changed to Osteen when we moved to America and yes, Joel Osteen is in the family tree, however, he is from a separate branch and represents an apple that has fallen FAR from the tree. We are originally from Cork however family members in other cities wouldn't be farfetched. I hope this was helpful.

Start with the earliest known ancestor and work backward to gather more information.
Be patient and persistent. Genealogy research can be time-consuming, but it can be very rewarding.
Network with other researchers who may have information about O'Steen families.
Consider hiring a professional genealogist if you're struggling to find information on your own.
