Looking for Malloy/Mulloy/Molloy Ancestors

Going on very limited information so far for my genealogy reserach. I have my father's (born 1948, Syracuse, NY)birth certificate which has his mother as Mary Agnes Malloy b. 1908 in Ireland. It states she lived in Syracuse, NY for 20 years before having my father.

I may have found her on the Ellis Island Passenger List in 1925 on the Westphalia:

http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632316

Her father was D. Mulloy in Lavy, Charlestown, County Mayo. She was going to stay with her cousin, Katie Brett in NYC.

After signing up for Rootsireland.ie, I found that Mary's father would have been Dominick Mulloy, possibly born in 1872 or 1878. Dominick's mother would have been Bridget Brett, but from there I could not find Katie.

Just looking to see if anyone out there shares a branch of the Mu/a/olloy tree with my father and I, and if you have any tree information of your own.

Hi Seamus,

Thank you for the information.  From what I have gathered so far, the Mary on my dad's birth certificate was born in 1908.  I know some of these dates can be a bit off on the older records so it is possible that her birth year is off.  However, my dad's birth year is 1948 so that puts Mary at 40 if 1908 is her correct birth year, which is already on the older side.

Trying to track the Mary Malloys that came over to the United States was what I figured to be the best approach to narrow the possible matches.  That is how I wound up finding Mary w/father listed as Domk (Dominick) Mulloy.

Do you know if there are any Mulloy or Brett family members that had ancestors immigrate to the U.S.?  Particularly in the New York state area?

Thank you,

Hello Maine, I believe I can help you. All of the people you mentioned are in my family tree. My maiden name is Mulloy, and my ancestors were from Lavy More, Charlestown, Co. Mayo. Many of them emigrated to New York.

The link you provided doesn't lead to a specific document, so I can't view the one you're referring to, but I think you may have got mixed up. I will attempt to summarise below as succinctly as possible, but it's a bit convoluted so bear with me!

Dominic Mulloy (sr) was my 3rd great-uncle. He and his wife Bridget Brett had a son, Domnick (jr), born in 1872. I have no record of Domnick (jr) marrying or having children. It is possible that he had a daughter named Mary Agnes, but if she was born out of wedlock, there are unlikely to be any records for her.

I do have a Mary Agnes Mulloy in my tree, born 21st December 1905 (sometimes listed as 1906) to John Mulloy (Molloy) and Agnes (nee Fleming, widow Kilbride). John Mulloy was Dominic Mulloy (sr)'s nephew, via Dominic's brother, Denis Mulloy. So this Mary Agnes was Dominic (sr)'s great-niece, and Domnick (jr)'s 1st cousin once removed, rather than a daughter to either one of them. Could she be the one you're looking for?

Mary Agnes sailed to New York in 1923 on the Franconia, arriving on 3rd July. So the dates would appear to match up with your father's birth year, or close enough. I am assuming that your father took his mother's surname and you don't know who his father (your paternal grandfather) was? I don't have a record of this Mary Agnes's marriage or children, but if you can provide me with your paternal grandfather's surname, I may be able to find the records (all my info is from ancestry.co.uk).

I am also assuming that, since her surname was Brett, Katie Brett was from the Brett line and not the Mulloy one. So I don't have any information on her. I did a quick search on Bridget Brett to check for a possible link there, but there's almost no information about her. If Katie was the niece of Bridget Brett, that would make her something like Mary Agnes's second cousin once removed, by marriage. Eek, I'm getting confused! But it is conceivable that Mary Agnes referred to Katie as her cousin, even if she was a more complex relative.

It may be easier for you to just take a look at my Mulloy family tree on ancestry.co.uk. If you give me your email address I can send you an invitation to view it. I am attaching two photographs: one is of Mary Agnes and her siblings, the children of John Mulloy and Agnes (the 'Kate' in the caption refers to Catherine Mulloy, not Katie Brett). The other is of John and Agnes and three of their children (including Mary Agnes). There may be a family resemblance for you. I hope some of this helps!

Hi,

This is a great help, thank you!  My e-mail is jmalloy86@gmail.com if you want to send the link of the ancestry tree.  My paternal grandfather's last name is listed as Petkon, born in New York around 1910.  We do not have much to go on, and i cannot seem to find much about him so we have been focusing on Mary.

I have submitted my DNA to ancestry.com, my dad's is on FamilyTree.  I am hoping that the ancestry database can generate some more definitive connections.  I should get the results back next month.

I found a Malloy tree on ancestry a few weeks ago, and it seemed to confirm what I had seen on roots.ie.  I have attached it below, maybe it will link up with yours!

Just a heads up on what I know , and this is from memory , there were 2 farms in lavy owned by the Mulloys in 1857 which was probably a single farm at one time, the landholders were James and Bryan Mulloy , The land was owned by the Dillon family from Loughglynn co Roscommon . Denis took over from Bryan and Domnick took over from James , the ruins of Denis's farm is still there ,  I can find no trace of Dominicks place . I believe Denis married Mary Flannery who lived nearby ( the Flannerys are still there ) , Dominick married Bridget Brett from Broher co Sligo and had 6 sons , bridget died young and Dominick married again and went on to have a further 11 children , 6 more sons and 5 daughters . I am descended from Thomas Mulloy son of Dominick Mulloy and Bridget Brett , a brother of Thomas went to live in Cloonaweema which is now Roscommon but used to be Mayo , a son of Dennis went to live in Gowel ... hoping to help someone

Tommy

Thank you for your information Tommy, this is invaluable to me and my own ancestry work! Are you able to tell me precisely where the ruins of Denis's farm are? I would dearly love to visit them one day, Denis was my great-great-grandfather. I can confirm that Denis did marry Mary Flannery. I have the Thomas Mulloy you speak of on my own family tree (he was my 1st cousin, 3 times removed), so you and I must be related. :)

cobnut@outlook.com

Hiya cousin , greetings from Ireland ... Denis's old farm is about 34 mile from Charlestown on the old Dublin rd just after the bend on the left hand side , a new house was built by the Collerans who run the pharmacy in Charlestown and the wilderness around the farm was cleared , before that it was invisible from the road . It was abandoned sometime in the early 50's I believe, the last of the Mulloys moved to Nottingham , England ... I was in touch with them but a fried hard drive has lost the E-mail address . I would be glad to take some photo's for you , my E-mail is aurozeno@eircom.net . On the 1901 census at the Harrington household in Lavymore there is one of Denis's daughters staying there , Mary , and Patrick Mulloy who was my great uncle, head of household James Harrington's daughter (Catherine) having married Tom Mulloy .

Tommy

Thank you Tommy, I have emailed you. :)

Hi all.
I sent a rather lengthy message to Tommy while I was trying to figure out how to get on here... Clearly, I managed to work around something, so I wanted to post to the group.

I am researching the above mentioned family of Dominick Mulloy and his second wife, Catherine Connor.  Specifically, one of their daughters, Mary Mulloy (b. ca 1890, Lavey More).

Dominick's first wife, Bridget Brett died in Mar 1875 and Dominick remarried Catherine in December 1875.  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1875/11223/8114084.pdf

I find them in Lavey More in 1901 - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Kilbeagh/Lavy_Mor… and they are living down the street from the parents of Dominick's son Thomas from his first marriage, James and Mary Harrington.  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Kilbeagh/Lavy_Mor…;  In that household, Thomas' oldest son, Patrick appears to be there while the rest of his family is in Bunnacranagh in Sligo... http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Sligo/Achonry_West/Bun… The girl in the household is Mary Mulloy and I believe she is Dominick and Catherine's daughter.  She is missing from their household in 1901 but appears in the proper place in 1911. See - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Kilbeagh/Lavy__Mo…;

Patrick is also back with his folks in 1911 - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Sligo/Achonry_West/Bun…;

I have recently uncovered a NJ marriage certificate for my father's cousin, Daniel Malone, that has him married to Mary Malloy [sic] daughter of Dominic Malloy and Catherine Connor.  I am attaching that for you to see.   I have Daniel well documented and can place him in NJ and he and Mary moved right after getting married to Atlantic City NJ, where they had a child in 1919, who died at 13 days of age.  They are in the 1920 US Census there and in the City directory until 1922 where I lose them.  I find Daniel again in 1942 living in North NJ but I can't tell from the record if he is still married.
So, I am trying to document this Mary Mulloy/Malloy to learn what happened to both her and Daniel.  There is a US record for Social Security that cites a Mary Malloy Peters, with the same parents Dominick and Catherine Connor Malloy but given the year of death, 1963 and Daniel's year of death (also a SS record) of 1977, that would imply that they may not have stayed together or that I have more of a quandry than I think.

Does any of this ring any bells with anyone on here?
Any and all insight greatly appreciated.

cts@teleport.com

As a follow up, I managed to go through the Lowpark entries page by page for the timeperiod of Mary Mulloy's birth.  I eventually found her and discovered why she didn't come up in the index.  Her DOB is 15 Sep 1888.   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…;  She is entered in the record as "Meloy."  So, not a transcription error - however, given penciled circles in the record, I suspect someone either tried to correct the record or flagged it.  The index still reflects the entered spelling.

Thomas - I connected with your cousin Pam via Ancestry.  She is the one who gave me the alternate birth year.  :-)

MY GRANDMOTHER IS KATIE BRETT

Wow.. I have some information on this. I am Sean Stockmeyer My Mother is Catherine Monaghan (Daughter of Catherine (or Katie Brett) who is the Daughter of Ellen Brett who is the Daughter of Thomas Brett who you said moved to Cloonaweema which is all true. By the way Cloonaweema is still in Mayo. My grandmother is Katie Brett !!!  Katie Brett was an only child of Ellen Brett who had her at the age of 40yo...  her father died in the mines in England when she was 1yo and her mother remarried a man named Burke (I am forgetting his first name) her mother died when she was just 3 years old. She was raised by her stepdad in Cloonaweema till she was 18yo.

She was living in NYC after coming over from Cloonaweema (Charlestown) at the age of 18yo. Although at first, she was working in Philadelphia. She stayed in NYC (married Patrick Monaghan) and had 4 kids.. my Aunt Mary Monaghan (Passed Away) , Uncle Charlie Monaghan (Living), Catherine Monaghan (My mom still alive) and Patrick Monaghan (Passed away).. they then moved from NYC (E 96th St) up to Rockland County where my mother lives today.  Please feel free to contact me at seven two zero four hundred nineteen seventy nine .. my mother had also been looking for the lost cousin who was on Long Island last we heard.

IrelandXO member

So the first reason you had such a hard time is that she was called Katie even though on different censuses she is either Katie or Catherine ... a common interchange.

IrelandXO member

I screwed that all up with my notes, But for sure  Me>>MOM>> Katie Mulligan (Born in the Cloonaweema house of Thomas Brett in 1911) daughter of Ellen Brett (Thomas's daughter).

Katie may have gone by the name Brett because her father died in the Coal mines of Wales when she was just 1 or 2 years old ... she also got remarried so she was known as Katie Brett but she came over from Cloonaweema at the age of 17 or 18 which would be 1928-1929. She was definitely the granddaughter of Thomas Brett.

Who in the thread had the information about the huge Brett family and knowing that one moved to Cloonaweema??

If you go back to the 1850's Griffith's Valuation you see a Brett in Cloonaweema but it was Patrick Brett ( I guess that may be Thomas's Father) I am asking because you said that Thomas moved to Cloonaweema. There is only Thomas in Cloonaweema in the 1901 and 1911 Census in the 1850 there is a Patrick Brett in Cloonaweema.  Any thoughts?

IrelandXO member

Hi Sean , I am not sure exactly who Katie Brett is , I have never been able to find her in the location where she ought to have been , all I know about her is that she helped a Mulloy/Molloy when they first came to America from Lavymore Charlestown so there must have been some family connection somewhere.

The Brett / Mulloy connection comes from a marriage in the late 1850's early 1860's ( from memory here ) of Domonick Mulloy to Bridget Brett , but we know that Bridget Brett came from Broher co Sligo (Bunnaghcrannagh) daughter of John Brett and Bridget Hart , I only know of one brother of Bridget , John Brett who moved with his wife and kids from Broher to Pittsburgh PA in the 1880's? . My search for Katie Brett centred on Broher , but a lack of records in that area turned up no results .

Tommy

My wife's 3 x Great Grandfather is James Malloy b abt 1796 Kilbeagh (according to ancestry). By 1838 he is in Broseley, Shropshire, England. He was married to Mary - no other name or marriage details other than she too was born in Ireland. We wonder if James' father is the James who appears in the 1857 Griffith's Valuation record for Lavy More?

James and Mary had 4 children - James, Mary, John, and Mathew or Martin, all born in Kilbeagh (there may be more not yet found) By 1851 a Thomas and John Molloy - orphans - were living with them.

At times the surname appears as Molloy/Malloy/Maloy/Mulley

In the 1851 Census a Catherine Howley/Fowley, a widow aged 40, also from Kilbeagh, was lodging with the family.

We would be greatful for any background information this family.  We are hoping to visit the Castletown area in March this year.

chrisomilson@g…

Hi Chrism ,

The timeline does not fit , the James Mulloy in the Griffiths was also born in the late 1700's in Lavymore but he also died there , we believe he was either the brother or cousin of Bryan Mulloy who also was listed on the Griffiths in Lavymore . I am descended from James Mulloy (ggg grandfather ) and Pam on this page is descended from Bryan Mulloy , DNA results confirm we are strongly related , have you had your DNA done ? . We had always assumed that James and Bryan were brothers from a common father , but if they were first cousins that would make it possible for another James to be added to the same generational timeline ( born late 1700's early 1800's ) and this may be your James  , but records pre 1840's are non existant for Lavymore and only DNA could confirm this . There are Howleys living in Charlestown in the 1901 census which is only half a mile from Lavy .

                                                                                                                                                                                    Tommy.

Tommy

Hi Tommy,

Many thanks for your reply.  Since my post I have spent more time looking at this and quickly realised the timelines don't fit at all! I have trawled as many Irish records as I can find these last few days and still work on the hypothesis that our James came from Lavymore but am unable to find any link with your James or Bryan.  Not sure if you have ever come across the James who moved to Broseley in Shropshire. He was quite varied in his age recording - at times born 1791, 1796, 1801 and his death record suggests 1787.  He was also married to a Mary who seemingly was born in Kilbeagh in 1905/6.

I have now also assumed your James and Bryan were brothers but that just increases the size of the brickwall re my James.  If they were cousins, not brothers, then maybe there is an answer though not sure we will ever find it.

My wife has done her DNA with Ancestry.  How do we share it? Nothing has come up automatically other than she has a 21% Irish heritage. Her tree is not public but happy to share if it helps.

Just about set to plan a March visit to Charlestown etc - our son and family live in Dublin - so taking the chance to at least see Mayo if not find the dead!!

Regards, Chris

chrisomilson@g…

Dear Chris ,

I believe that you can download the DNA from ancestry and upload it to Gedmatch to see if there are any matches , also useful is the Mayo DNA group on facebook , both are free . A visit to Mayo is always worthwhile , good luck .

Tommy

Tommy

Ugghhhh.... I love the idea of submitting DNA to find ancestors and family but there is NO regulation on it can you believe that??? Now the Mormons who own Ancestry.com can do anything they want and sell your DNA to ANYONE. Which also means that any family member who commits a crime will get identified because someone in their family was looking for genealogy connections. Yes... that is 100% true and while I don't want family members committing crimes, I don't love that my DNA is up for sale to anyone who wants it including China and other foreign governments.

I did go to Charlestown and Cloonaweema and the Parish and visited the priest there looking for records.  Patrick Brett >> Thomas Brett >> Katie Brett (Great Grandma) >> Catherine (Kate) Brett / Mulligan then to the states in 1929 born 1911 in Cloonaweema.

Hi

JAMES MULLOY/MOLLOY - Born 1816-1829 - County Mayo

I am hoping by reading all the comments on this thread that someone may be able to solve the mystery of my 2nd great grandfather James Mulloy/Molloy. From the limited records I have available he was born in County Mayo between 1816-1829 depending on which document you are looking at.  As none of these document’s state his parish of birth, placing him within a definite parish has been a challenge.  Nevertheless, with the advent of DNA I have identified through several matches that he is somehow related to the James and Brian Mulloy referenced in this thread: born 1798 and 1807 respectively.

James’ first indication of his Irish ancestry is on his marriage certificate in 1853 when he married Catherine Coyne in Staffordshire, England - James listing his father as a Thomas Molloy.  Extensive research has not been able to establish a baptism record for James or indeed any mention of a Thomas Molloy within a suitable age range in the Lavy more region which the DNA suggests our James may have originated. I have also extended my search to cover Sligo, Roscommon, and Galway as several of my DNA matches have links to those areas. But again, no concrete evidence has come to light on any of the searchable resources available online.

To complicate matters even further, if that’s possible, there is a suggestion through the DNA that James could be the illegitimate son of Bridget Molloy born in about 1798 and married Edward Finn in about 1827 in the Tuan District and died in Falleighter in 1889.  Could she have been the sister of James and Brian from Lavy more perhaps?

As a side note, I have considered he could be the James Molloy junior living in Broseley in Shropshire in 1851 but I do think this is a red herring.

I really would appreciate any suggestions that you may have regarding the mysterious James!

My email is carol.brunt@yahoo.com.au if you would prefer to contact me on that platform.

Thanks in advance

Carol

I'm interested to know more about you, you posted photos of my mother with myself and my brothers and sisters my son and nieces and nephews also one of my Dad and his brother and one of Dad with one of my  brothers.  I feel we must be closely related as otherwise you wouldn't have access to those photos I would love to hear from you and connect.

Look forward to corresponding.

Hi Eileen

I am not the MsMulloy1 (ancestry user name) who originally copied your photo's, that is actually another direct descendant of the Denis Mulloy from Laveymore.  I believe she has a pretty large tree on ancestry.

I am distantly related to the Laveymore Molloy's and through DNA matches am trying to discover exactly how they fit into my Irish ancestry.

Kind regards

Carol
