Looking for information about the Irish ancestry of Martin and Eliza Caldwell

I am looking for information about my great-great grandparents, Martin and Eliza Caldwell. From the brief information I have, it seems that Martin was born in Ireland in the 1820's - I have dates of 1821, 1824 and 1826, variously. 1826 seems the most likely, as it appears in more than one record. He died in 1909 in Baltimore, Maryland US. His wife Eliza (no maiden name given) was born about 1832 in Galway, Ireland. Martin and I presume Eliza arrived in the USin 1849, and his occupation is listed as Carpenter, both in US Census and Military records. Thank you for any help you can give me in tracing them! Dear Carol:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome!  If you have any more information for Martin Caldwell such as contained on his death certificate, that would be great.  Did the census information give you any indication about how long he and Eliza were married?  It might mean that they married in Ireland, or in the U.S.

If you need any further assistance, please let me know.  I will forward your query to some of our Galway volunteers and they might be able to assist further.  The very best of luck with your research.

Please consider creating a profile for Martin and Eliza on the XO Chronicles tab located at the top of the page as many of our members read these profiles, and they may have further information to share.

All the best,

Jane

Dear Jane,

Thank you so much for your speedy reply!  I do have short death notices in the Baltimore (Maryland) Sun newspaper, which say that:  Eliza (Elizabeth) Caldwell died in Baltimore on May 11, 1888, that she was a native of county Galway, Ireland, and that she ws marrid to Martin Caldwell.  The August 8, 1909 obituary in the Sun for Martin Caldwell gives a death date of August 7, 1909 in Baltimore, and states that he was the "beloved husband of Elizabeth Caldwell".  in the 1880 US Census, it lists both of their birth places as Ireland.  Also, I have a US Civil war draft registration record for Martin dated August 20 of 1863.    So, perhaps they were both born in County Galway?

I will create the profiles as you suggest, and am very grateful that you will forward my query to the Galway volunteers - I hope that they can track down more of Eliza and Martin's history!

Many thanks,

Carol

Dear Carol:

Thanks for that further information.

If Martin was a Civil War veteran, there may be a lot more information available about him.  Particularly, if he received a war pension.  You might look at the particular regiment if one is listed.  Often, the regiments have further information available online or through other military sites.

The best of luck with your research!

Kind regards,

Jane.
