Looking for Graney Families

Greetings! I'm looking for anyone by the name ofGraneyand any information about my ancestor Michael Graney B:1826, Curragh Kildare,D:1908 Prescot, Lancashire. M: Ellen Kelly probably before 1851. I'm also looking for the original home in Ireland of The Graney's. I've traced the Graney name to a parish in Kildare near Dermottcastle and also the villageof Taumgraney. The name Graney is supposedly from the pagan sun goddess Grainne but I have no other information besides that. Any insight or family connection is welcome. Please feel free to communicate with me and other Graney's on our new Facebook page entitled:"The Graney Surname" where we have 269 members. Thanks, Elaine Gullotta(Graney)

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

All the best with your Graney project. Hopefully other researchers with Graney connections will search and see your posting.

Hi

I just found your post when I was looking into my family. I think Michael and Ellen are my great-great grandparents - they had a son Joseph (born about 1863) and he had a daughter Louisa Graney (born 1897 in Scotland) - she was my grandmother.

Anyway- happy to share any information I have which may be useful

Best

Hi Maria.

I am new to all of this and have just started poking about (for want of a better phrase) in my mother's side of the family.

Her mum, my grandmother was born Mary Elizabeth Graney, daughter to James Graney, your great grandfather's younger brother.

So we share great great grandparents!

Because Mary Elizabeth and her husband Arthur Lambert died young, leaving 4 young children (my mum being the eldest girl) we know little about the family and there was even some doubt about the name.... the Lambert girls thought it may be O'Graney.  Anyway the Curragh connection is really good news, as is emailing a distant cousin!

Kind regards

Gilly

Hi.

I've just stumbled across this thread...I'm a Causon (maiden name), my Great Grandmother on my Dads side was Harriet Graney, her parents were John and Elizabeth Austin.  John Graney was born in Wales, his Dad was Michael Graney born 1829 in Courough, Ireland.  It would be amazing to connect with my wider family. Gemma.

Hi Gemma,

So glad we were able to find a connection. If you can go out to the Facebook group, The Graney Surname, we can chat much more frequently and make other connections too. There are 376 Graney's there now.

Does anybody know what became of Joseph Graney B: 1863 in Wales or Scotland.

He married Elizabeth Cummings and had 5 kids in Clydebank. Elizabeth died in c. 1901 and at least one of the kids went to Scotland to live with her father. Joseph left this home to find work at the John Brown Shipyard in Clydebank Dunbartonshire. He had another child named Paul Graney with Eleanor Ryder in 1908. After that Joseph seems to have disappeared. He may have gone to Massachusetts. Three of his sons (Lawrence, John and William) did immigrated to Massachusetts c. 1919.

Any information on Joseph or any other members of this Graney line will be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Elaine Gullotta
