Hello,

Do you have the civil birth record? If yes, what does it show?

Who were Patrick's parents? siblings? children?

Thanks.

Hello,

The town lands of Glencalry, Upper and Lower, are in the civil parish of Doonfeeny and the RC parish of Killala, Mayo. I checked two sources for his birth, but did not find it. If Patrick emigrated, and that birth date is from self-reported record such as a census or death record, they are not always accurate as folks back then did not keep track of their birth dates as we do today. More information about him would be helpful.

Regards,

Carolyn

Hello , Thank you both for your kind reply’s , Patrick was the eldest of six siblings, his younger four siblings births were all registered but Patrick’s and his sister Mary’s were not , he is on the 1901 census down as living at house number eight in a place called Shranaplia next to the townland of Baroosky, Mayo on the 1911 census the family have moved to Glencalry and Patrick in not included as by this time he is shown to be living in Northumberland UK , so. Basically it’s going to be parish baptism records I’m looking at , it could have been a home christening due to child mortality being high ? However , Patrick and Mary must have been christened as his mother Bridget would have been churched ( allowed to go back to the church after his birth )

His parents were called Patrick Hegarty and Bridget Hegarty ne Maughn , his was illiterate so there has been some confusion over his DOB , we have 02/02/1878 and on the 1921 uk census he has the place of birth as Glancalry in 1879 , in previous uk census he states Ballycastle Mayo as his place of birth , Patrick died in 1958 in Ashington Northumberland ,

thank you so much for your help,

M Hegarty .

Hello,

I found Michael's civil birth record from 1884, and the town land is Glenamoy. This is in the RC parish of Belmullet, and that parish only has baptism records online from 1841 to 1872 - according to the NLI website. That is probably why you cannot locate his parish record. I too have the same problem in my genealogy records whereby there are records for some children, but not others in one family...even during the civil records birth period from 1864. Both Patrick and Mary should have a civil birth record...but only if their parents registered them. BTW, the town land of Srahnaplaia is not too far away from Glenamoy where you found them in the 1901 census.

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn , thank you again for your reply , it’s more or less where I’ve been for a year or two , I think one of the problems that I may have is that I don’t actually know where Patrick was born , if it was Srahnaplaia I think the church would have been at Aughoose as the parishes were apparently different at that time ? The Hegarty farmily house was still at Srahnaplaia until recent times even though the family had moved to Glencalry by 1911, as I mentioned earlier , Patrick and Mary must have been baptised or their mother Bridget would not be allowed back in the church , on a further note , Patrick left for the UK between 1901 and 1908 as he was married by then , as Ireland was under uk rule at the time with no travel restrictions would have been in place as such , would he at least have to carry some sort of ID card or? The problem I’m having is that technically he didn’t exist as such even though I have an immense paper trail back to me , I’ve even done an ancestry DNA test which came back 30% Irish from the North west Mayo area , I’m hoping to apply for an Irish passport but this is the wall I’ve met .

many thanks again ,

Michael Hegarty .

Michael,

I was mistaken about the ending year for the baptism records for the RC parish of Belmullet....it ends in 1881. Although you are not sure of his birthplace, it would seen that his and Mary's records would turn up somewhere given the years. Have you checked spelling errors in the translations? I could not locate my great great grandfather's baptism record for the longest time because his name was translated as Joan instead of John.

Regards,

Carolyn

Michael,

Keep in mind that Bridget's surname of Maughan may also be spelled Mahon, McMahon, etc. This might help as you research. Good luck.

Patrica & Carolyn , thanks again for the pointers , as neither my great grandparents nor my grand farther could read or write , my surname Hegarty has indeed many variations, Heggerty Haggerty etc but we are pretty sure it’s Hegarty is correct going off the remaining Hegartys in Ireland apparently it was all down to the official registrar who simply wrote down what he heard .

there are some records online with Mayo names and graves , the Golden Langan for one and on the Ballycastle church records has my Great grand farthers death notice and Bridget as his wife and also my great uncle Michael,s death is on the records there .

just out of interest , wasn’t it normal to be buried at the church where you were baptised in ?
