Looking for information on my Salmon/Bowan ancestors who are from Westmeath or Mayo
Salmon/Bowen
The information I’m chasing is anything relevant to the family tree connected to John Salmon and Margaret Bowen – Siblings or parents
While I have a record of John & Margaret being married in England (no certificate) they married in England and had two children then left for Ireland where they had their remaining 3 children - or were they going back to Ireland. My research indicates perhaps a parent dying and they went back to work the farm. However, I did notice there are many more Salmons in the Suffolk district so I’m assuming they too could be relatives and perhaps have a more of a connection there than to Ireland.
John Salmon married Margaret Bowen in Southwark, Surrey in 1836 when he was 25 years old. This gives him a birth date of about 1811, unsure how old Margaret was or when she was born – my guess they were both born in Ireland.
John Salmon & Margaret Salmon (Nee Bowen or Bone) are parents to
Peter – Born 1837 St. Olaves, Suffolk, England.
Elizabeth – Born 1839 St. Olaves, Suffolk, England.
Christopher – Born 1841 Kilpatrick, Westmeath Ireland.
John – Born 1846 Kilpatrick, Westmeath Ireland
Thomas – Born 1855 Kilpatrick, Westmeath Ireland.
What I do know is they had two sons who migrated to Australia. Peter was the first child of John Salmon and Margaret Bowen who was born in 1837 & Christopher (my GGrandfather) was born about 1841 – both born in Kilpatrick, Westmeath Ireland.
Peter & Christopher Salmon migrated to Australia in 1863 from Liverpool aboard the ship Rockhampton. Can’t find no reference if both stayed in England for a while and worked or if they got paid passage to Australia from Ireland via Liverpool.
Peter Salmon never married and died and is buried in Bathurst NSW Australia in 1879 from liver disease aged (44) lived only 16 years in Australia - his profession was a labourer, no other recorded records of him in Australia.
The only record I have on Elizabeth Salmon is a death record dated in 1847 and she was buried in Collinstown Kilpatrick, this seems fitting because that’s where I believe her family lived. She died 7 years before her youngest brother was born and i believe her mother is buried there to 1879.
John Salmon Jnr migrated to America (New Jersey) I have DNA links in my family tree tying him to a John Salmon born 1896 from Mayo
The youngest born - Thomas Salmon married a Rose Hannon and may well have inherited all the land and stayed on in Collinstown where he had 9 children. His mother was buried in Collinstown in 1873 – don’t know what happened to the Father John Snr. I have DNA links in my family tree to Thomas.
Christopher Salmon married Annie Agnes Wilson according to their marriage certificate in Ipswich Queensland Australia. She was born in Bedford Bedfordshire England 7-5-1851…I have no other information on Annie before she migrated to Australia.
I’m really stuck on who John Salmon’s Snr parents and siblings are - this has been my road block for a while now. If I can find who John Salmon’s parents are and who his siblings are I can close the book on as far I want to take my family tree research.
I suspect the John and Thomas Salmon Snr from Kilpatrick could well be a bother or cousin to the Salmons in Mayo.
