Looking for living relatives in Ireland

My husband and I are going to Ireland in October. This has been on our bucket list since our 30th wedding anniversary and we will be celebrating 46 years!

We are wondering if we have any living relatives still in Ireland. The family would have been Charles O'Boyle (1818-1899), who was married to Margaret McNeill (1828-1004). They had 13 children: Ann, James, Alexander, Margaret, Catherine, Henry, Mary, Rose, Charles, Bridget, John, Daniel, and Anne. The family originated in Glenarm, Deerpark.

Their son, James (1848-1936), emigrated in about 1869. He married Mary Ellen Lavelle in Montana. James was my husband's grandfather.

Your family as you know lived in Co. Antrim which is part of Northern Ireland. Below are the 1901 and 1911 census records for the family. Margaret was living with her son John in 1901 and after she passed the 1911 census shows John with his family in Tickmacrevan civil parish. There is no 1926 census for Northern Ireland. All civil records after 1921 are only available on the PRONI site https://www.proni.gov.uk/

I will alert our Co. Antrim volunteer to this message.

Sherry,

Griffiths Valuation for 1861 lists Charles O’Boyle in Deerpark Farms with plot 5 which was a 25 acre farm.

Probate abstract:

Probate of the Will of Charles O'Boyle late of Deerpark Glenarm County Antrim Farmer who died 15 March 1899 granted at Belfast to Charles O'Boyle Junior of Larne said County Manager of a Posting Establishment and John O'Boyle of Deerpark Farmer.

The will itself is on the PRONI wills site. It gives his wife Margaret a life interest in the farm after which it is to pass to his son John. There are bequests for daughter Anne, wife of Charles McCaughy; daughter Catherine wife of William McAllister & son Henry; there is provision that in the event of John pre-deceasing his father, the farm was to be sold and split amongst John’s children. His son Charles was to be involved in any decision making in such an event.

Larne Reporter of 25th March 1899 had a very lengthy article describing Charles funeral. Family burial ground seems to be in Carnlough.

Probate abstract:

Probate of the Will of Margaret O'Boyle late of Deerpark Glenarm County Antrim Widow who died 1 November 1904 at Larne County Antrim granted at Belfast to John O'Boyle Farmer and Charles O'Boyle Managing Director.

Above will is also on-line on the PRONI website. Margaret was living in Main St, Larne (presumably with son Charles). She mentions son James now living in America; daughter Catherine McAllister; daughter Mary Owens; son John; son Henry and the residue was to go to son Charles. It also mentions daughter Margaret and the children of deceased daughter Annie McCahey. It also mentions the estate of her deceased brother Henry McNeill.

Probate abstract:

Probate of the Will of the late Charles O'Boyle, Larne, Co. Antrim, Managing Director, Henry McNeill Ltd, who died 22 April 1919, granted at Belfast 18 July 1919 to Hugh McNeill, Farmer and James Walker, Auctioneer. Effects: £3459 16s. Assets re-sworn to £4421 13s 1d on 12 October 1922.

Above will is not on-line but should be in PRONI, Belfast in paper format. The Evening Irish Times of 23rd April 1919 has an item recording his death.

Probate abstract:

O'Boyle John of Deerpark Glenarm county Antrim farmer died 9 December 1948 at Larne District Hospital Larne Probate Belfast 3 May to John McGarel and Hugh Reid farmers. Effects £5031 8s. 10d.

Above will is not on-line but should be in PRONI, Belfast in paper format. Charles junior and John’s wills should give you a lead on their descendants. And if you call at any of the farms in Deerparks today, they may be able to direct you to any O’Boyles still there.

Larne Times of 30.11.1973 mentions that Charles O’Boyle of Deerpark won an agricultural prize for best bullock. So there were O’Boyles still farming there then.
