Looking for Information on William Gray

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out to gather more information about my ancestor, William Gray. I have some details but am struggling to find more information about his birth, parents, siblings (if any), death, and details about how he travelled to and from America and his work in America. I would also love to find information about the birth of his son James in America.

Here’s what I know about him:

William Gray was a stonemason who travelled between Ireland and America.

William married an Irish woman Mary Lyons on 25 March 1867 in Parkersburg, Wood, West Virginia, United States. According to the original marriage document, William was about 30 at the time of marriage, he was born in Ireland and his parents were George Gray and Mary Gray (maiden name unknown).

William Gray and his wife, Mary Lyons had at least 2 sons and 5 daughters –

  • Mary Ellen Gray was born 13 of July 1869 in Lusk, County Dublin, Ireland. She married Charles Clifford, a British solider, on the 15 of November 1896 in Lusk. She died the 8 of April 1926 in Lusk.

  • William Gray Junior was born 24 July 1871 in Lusk, County Dublin, Ireland. He died 4 May 1933 after an accident in a quarry. He did not marry – his death registry lists him as a bachelor.

  • Anne Jane Gray was born 29 July 1874 in Lusk. She married Edward Rorke on 1 February 1898 in Howth, County Dublin, Ireland.

  • James Gray was born in America on unknown date - possibly around 1875. He died 2 February 1945 in Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. He did not marry – his death registry lists him as a bachelor.

  • Unnamed Baby Gray was born and died on 3 October 1876 in Lusk, County Dublin.

  • Susan Gray (named Susanna on Baptism Register) was born 28 April 1879 in Lusk, County Dublin. Susan died 17 November 1880 in Lusk at one years old.

  • Susan Mary Gray (named Susan Mary on Baptism Register, Susanna on marriage registry and Susannah when living in the UK) was born 11 January 1884 in Lusk, County Dublin. She married a British soldier named Sidney Moreton Fuller on the 21 of August 1910 at the church of St. Paul’s in Arran Quay, North Dublin.

William’s ‘dwelling place’ was listed as 'North America', 'Virginia, North America', and 'America' on his children's birth registries (Mary Ellen (1869), William (1871) and Susan Mary (1884)) and Bootle (?), Liverpool was listed as his 'dwelling place' on his daughter Susan’s (1879) Irish birth registry. I do know he was in Ireland at some point as he was present at a petty sessions court in Balbriggan, County Dublin, on January 2, 1877.

I suspect he may have died before 1893, as his wife, Mary, was listed as a widow when she passed on February 11, 1893.

If anyone has any information about William Gray or resources that could help me in my search, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks so much for your help!

So I'm the great granddaughter of Anne Jane O'Rourke/Rorke (née Gray). As far as I know my great granny spelt it Grey. I've only seen it spelt Gray since starting my research.

You have added a good few things for me that I didn't know. I'm also struggling with finding information. So, a family member wrote notes about family members. There could be errors. I think the note maker could have mixed up William with George maybe. I have that he was from Belfast and a member of the British horse soldiers for the British army. He left the British army and became a stonemason and worked on the building of All Saints Protestant Church in Raheny. He would spend the week there and travel home at the weekends. People are unsure where Mary was a lot of the childrens lives because her sisters looked after the children whilst he was in Raheny. One weekend he went home to Lusk and died. His sisters came down down from the North to take the children and raise them as Protestants. Mary's sisters won the fight and the children stayed in Dublin and were raised Catholic. My great granny was sent to live with her aunt Mrs. Maxwell in Howth.

I thought only James Gray was born in the US because his nickname was Yank.

Some people online said that Mary died in Ipswich.

They were married in West Virginia. I have a sneaky suspicion that he had relatives there as I have come across distant relatives there and the surrounding states. I've noticed online other Grays from Ireland moving there and I can't remember now the other reasons. I think the other Grays in West Virginia/Virginia proper could be linked to other surnames I have come across.

I'm sure I have seen a census in Ireland where the children were listed.

Let me know if you find anything else.
