7 Atkinsons from Ballymartin signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912 (so you know their views on Home Rule). Their signatures can be seen on-line on the PRONI website.
Newry Reporter of 11th May 1940 carried a report of Mrs Joseph Atkinson’s death in Ballymartin. “A lady of much personal charm she spent a considerable part of her life in America and when she and her husband returned home some few years ago and settled down at Ballymartin they made many friends in the district”. Family burying ground in Kilkeel was of very large dimensions. Chief mourner J. Atkinson (husband) and other relatives.
In the 1830 tithes there were 3 Atkinson farms in Ballymartin plus 2 in Mullartown (which look to possibly be connected judging by the memorandum to title in PRONI):

Thank you all for all of the information. It has given me a good starting point for my search.
IS there any information for before the marriage of Jane and Arthur Snr so that we can go back any further?
lyn,
Regarding getting back a generation or two, the family appears to have been mainly Presbyterian and attended Kilkeel Presbyterian church (though Jane Atkinson married in Kilkeel Church of Ireland). Kilkeel Presbyterian was founded in 1822, but only has baptism records from 1862 onwards. Prior to 1822 the family would probably have attended Mourne Presbyterian (founded 1696) but it only has records from 1839 onwards. Kilkeel Church of Ireland’s records start in 1812 (if any of the children attended it.). So getting back much further based on church records will probably not be possible.
However you might get more information from the records in PRONI that I have mentioned, but they are not on-line and you would need to get a researcher to look them up for you. You might also find things like leases or wills in the Registry of Deeds (which is on Familysearch). Their records started in 1709 but can be hard to work with if you are unfamiliar with them. Again a professional researcher might be the answer for that.
For professional researchers in Ulster, try the Society of Genealogists:
A lot of Irish research comes to a stop around 1800 due to the lack of records. You might get back to the 1700s but you are very unlikely to be able to trace the family back to Scotland where they will have originated in the 1600s.
