Looking for help identifying Patrick Mahony and Margaret Gleeson – Limerick

I’m trying to identify and confirm the family of Patrick Mahony and Margaret Gleeson, who were in the Castleconnell/Limerick area in the mid-1800s.

I have four known children:

  • Jane Mahony — baptised 6 September 1857
  • Mary Mahony — baptised 22 March 1859
  • Catherine Mahony — baptised 1 November 1862
  • Patrick Mahony — baptised 21 June 1865

The children's baptisms were recorded in the Castleconnell area.

One particularly interesting record is the death of a Patrick Mahoney at Killenan/Killinin on 15 January 1886, aged 55. He was recorded as married, and the informant was Catherine Mahoney, daughter, present at death.

This may be the Patrick Mahony who was married to Margaret Gleeson, as Catherine was one of their known children.

However, I have not yet been able to prove this connection, and I have also been unable to find a marriage record for Patrick Mahony and Margaret Gleeson.

I am aware that the Castleconnell parish register does not begin until the 1860s, so I understand why their marriage may not survive in the Castleconnell records. I am hoping someone familiar with the local area or surrounding parishes might know where else I could look.

I would be very grateful for any local knowledge or suggestions regarding:

  1. Patrick Mahony and Margaret Gleeson
  2. Their possible residence around Castleconnell, Grange or Killenan/Killinin
  3. The Killenan/Killinin connection
  4. Any possible marriage record for Patrick and Margaret
  5. Whether anyone recognises these Mahony or Gleeson families in the area during this period.

In particular, I am trying to establish whether the 1886 Patrick Mahoney of Killenan is the same Patrick Mahony who was married to Margaret Gleeson.

Thank you

Hi, thank you again for all your help. I'm still quite new to genealogy, so I'm learning as I go and sometimes I don't quite know where to look next.

I've had a good look through the books around Castleconnell like you suggested, but I'm still struggling to pin down Patrick Mahony Sr.'s parents.

I think I've got his son Patrick Jr. fairly well established — born in Grange in 1865, later married Annie Charles, and their son James was born in Castleconnell in 1889, with D. L. Gleeson as one of the sponsors. This is one of the reasons I think I've identified Patrick Jr. correctly.

I have some leads on Patrick Sr.'s wife, Margaret Gleeson, but it's really Patrick Sr.'s own parents that I'm having difficulty finding.

If you have any ideas about where I might look next, I'd be really grateful. I really appreciate the time you've already taken to help me — it's been a huge help.

William,

Were you able to find Patrick and Ann Charles' wedding record? I haven't. It might identify if Patrick sr, was deceased. I am thinking the Patrick who married Ann O'Connor was the son of the Patrick who died in 1886. Have you searched Irish censuses, marriages, and death records for Patrick jr. siblings. Irishgenealogy provides lots of free records. Note, records don't start until 1864. FamilySearch (free) sometimes provides info not found on Ancestry.

Hi, I’ve found a possible lead.

I do not have the marriage record for Patrick Mahony and Ann Charles — I only have records for their children, along with the 1901 and 1911 census records. In the 1901 census, Annie’s mother is living with them, with her name spelled Ellen Charless.

I’ve also found these possible earlier Mahony records:

Patrick Mahony — baptised 25 September 1829

Father: Thomas Mahony

Mother: Mary Lysaght

Residence: Stonepark

Sponsors: Jn Lysaght and El Rice

Michael Mahony — baptised 14 October 1831

Father: Thomas Mahony

Mother: Mary Lysaght

Sponsors: Jn Carroll and Joh Delaney

I just can’t find the link between this family and Patrick Mahony Sr.
