Looking for Conole relatives in County Clare

Kilfarboy (Clare)

My great great grandparents, Peter Conole and Bridget Conway, were born in County Clare most likely between 1830 and 1840. Unfortunately, I don't have birth dates or the names of either of their parents nor do I know exactly where they were born or when or where they were married. The only clues I have about possible birth locations relate to the birth places of two of their children (my great grandmother, Mary Margaret Conole and one of her brothers - Peter Conole Jr.) Mary Margaret was baptized at St. Joseph's Church in Miltown Malbay (https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/42954216?mark=7b22746f6b656e223a22694e7250492f68317142506853693673527049362b3667713974726637767033334a6d754553447447304d3d222c22746f6b656e5f76657273696f6e223a225632227d ) and Peter was baptized at St. Brigid's Church in Liscannor (https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/42954322?mark=7b22746f6b656e223a227a2b2f35436e783043434630334b417544417077302f52777a7358736b7a37634e416431444a73487153493d222c22746f6b656e5f76657273696f6e223a225632227d) & (https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/42954359?mark=7b22746f6b656e223a22694932626874714546744d7568454a4a34546b4c4d6d62537a79474f3454653449776177653850747134453d222c22746f6b656e5f76657273696f6e223a225632227d). I also have the civil registration for Mary Margaret.(see attachments).

Peter was a tailor by trade his whole life. If you can provide any information regarding Peter or Bridget's parents' names, Peter or Bridgets dates and places of birth, and any siblings they may have, that would be greatly appreciated.

Peter and Bridget emigrated initially to England around 1860 and most of their children were born there, as indicated below:

John Conole - B. 1860 in Wigan England D. 1862 in Bolton England

Thomas Conole - B. 1861 in Bolton England D. 1938 in New York City, NY USA

Mary Ann Conole - B. 1863 in Bolton England D. 1863 in Bolton England

Catherine Conole - B. 1865 in Bolton England D. 1874 in Bolton England

Richard Conole - B. 1867 in Bolton England D. 1956 in Orange Park, FL USA

Patrick Conole - B. abt 1870 Location uncertain D. 1962 in Binghamton, NY USA

Mary Margaret Conole - B. 1871 in Miltown Malbay Ireland D. 1908 in Providence RI USA (Kilfarboy Parish)

Peter Conole - B. 1872 in Liscannor Ireland D. 1873 in Bolton England

Catherine Agnes Conole - B. 1874 in Bolton England D. 1965 in Providence RI USA

Bridget/Breta Meria Conole - B. 1876 in Bolton England D. 1947 in Binghamton NY USA

Ellen Conole - B. 1878 in Bolton England D. 1879 in Bolton England

I don't know why (or exactly when) they returned to Ireland from England, but their stay in Ireland was short-lived. By early 1873, they were back in Bolton. Could a family member have been ill or dying? Or might there have been another reason for their return?

I have civil birth records and/or baptismal records for all of the children except for Patrick. I have found a civil birth record for a Patrick Conole with a birth date of March 31, 1872 at the Ennistymon Workhouse (see attachments). His mother's name is listed as Bridget Conole and there is no maiden name or father's name on the record. I've been told that this would indicate that Bridget was most likely an unwed mother. I'm wondering if Peter Conole may have had a sister Bridget who gave birth out of wedlock. The birth date coincides with the period that Peter and Bridget were in Ireland. Could it be that Peter and his wife Bridget adopted his sister's baby and raised him as their own? Is this something that might have happened during this time period?

Shortly after giving birth to their 11th child (Ellen), Bridget Conway Conole died (on April 18, 1878), leaving Peter with 7 children ranging in age from 17 to less than 1 years old. The youngest, Ellen, died two days before her 1st birth day in 1879. In February of 1879, Peter was arrested and tried for "obtaining charitable contributions under false pretenses" (see attachments). In September of that same year, the five youngest children (Richard, Patrick, Mary Margaret, Catherine, and Bridget) were admitted to the Bolton Union Workhouse by an aunt with the reason given as "father's neglect" (see attachments).

I haven't found any passenger list showing when Peter emigrated to the U.S., but I am guessing that he may have left England sometime between 1879 and 1881 or 1882. I do know that Patrick, Mary Margaret and Bridget came over on the ship Kansas in 1883 and Catherine came over on the ship Iowa in 1885 (see attachments).

The family initially settled in Providence, RI upon arriving in the U.S. Later, Peter (the father), Patrick, and Bridget settled in Binghamton, NY. Mary Margaret and Catherine Agnes, remained in the Providence, RI area. Thomas settled in New York City, NY and Richard moved to Bellingham, WA, but ultimately died in Orange Park, FL.

I do have an Ancestry Family Tree (The Bauer Family Tree): https://www.ancestry.com/invite-ui/accept?token=cEF_9QFe9WdG5C4itUUVa8_CL2skU0Sn5644askncMk=

I would like to know if I have any Conole relatives still in County Clare.

I have recenty found information on Ancestry about a John Conole who lived in Wigan England from about 1859 until his death. Records indicate that he is from County Clare as well and that his profession was tailor. This made me wonder if he might be some relative (a brother or cousin) of Peter Conole (see attachments). If you can provide any information to confirm or refute this, I would appreciate that as well.

Debby,

Just a bit of feedback...Peter and Patrick were both born in 1872 as you know, I don't think that they can both be in this family. I did not find a civil birth record for Peter which would show his father's occupation, so that's unfortunate. Since you have records of Patrick emigrating to the US, I'd leave him, and eliminate Peter. That certainly is a lot of moving around - between Ireland and England - for a tailor! The RC parish of Kilmanaheen (Ennistymon) where Patrick was born is just north of the RC parish of Miltown Malbay. Another sticking point that I see (after I mentioned to leave Patrick) is he is born in the workhouse to a woman with the surname of Conole...if this were Bridget Conway, it would say Conway. She could be a sister to Peter, and they took him in as you say OR just someone completely unrelated. It would be improbable for Bridget to give birth in the workhouse, and then get back together with Peter, and return to England and have three more children..in my opinion, that is.

Carolyn - Thanks so much for the feedback. Even though I don't have a civil birth registration for Peter Jr, I do have a civil death refistration for him from Bolton England and it does show his father's occupation as a tailor (see attachment below). I was originally theorizing that the Patrick born in the workhouse might have been the child of a sister to Peter (born out of wedlock) which would explain her having a maiden name of Conole. I had been told that it was unlikely that Peter and his wife (Bridget Conway Conole) would adopt his sister's child given that they already had so many children, but thought I would get another opinion. If Patrick is their biological child, I guess the reality is that, for whatever reason, they just didn't register his birth. I really appreciate your feedback and would welcome any other information or feedback you might be able to add. Thanks again!
