Looking for Fitzmaurice, Ballyhaunis

Hi,

I am looking for help researching Fitzmaurice. My husbands great grandfather Thomas was born Ballyhaunis 1857 to Patrick and possibly Mary Bride? He came to Lancashire in the late 1870's where he married a Margaret Fitzmaurice, who's family, I think were from Forthill and Castlebar (John, Grocer/baker). We think Thomas was from Derrynacong and related to Regan/Waldron but not sure how, we know there were two Patricks in the area through the griffiths valuation. We also think that Thomas was the eldest and had siblings namedMichael and Patrick. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I went on Roots Ireland and found Thomas' baptismal record from January 1856 and his mother's maiden name was Bride. I also located an 1861 baptismal record for a Margaret and an 1865 civil birth record for a Michael. The townland on the 1865 record was shown as Derreens. The baptisms were in the Annagh RC church. Here is a link to the register. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1040 ;Take a look at the last record below for a Patrick Fitzmaurice in 1866. Note that his mother was Mary Waldron and they lived in Dernacong.  Looks like there are two Patrick Fitzmaurice families with a mother named Mary.

Thank-you so much for your help, the problem is too many Patrick and Mary's!  My other issue is the dates, the census in the Uk shows him as 1881 - 24yrs 1891 - 31yrs  1901 - 44yrs  1911 - 53yrs and his death in Nov 1917 states he is 57!  So nothing quite adds up, if it is him then he would have been 25 - 35 - 45 - 55 and 61 at death.  I have scrolled through the records you sent a link for and can't see any other obvious candidates, so not sure where I go now but thank-you once again.

Noted your email communications and replies. Clare advised that a I look at your data.

I noted the birth details offered by Roger and your age scenario. As regard Census records on many occasions there often was little reverence shown towards them by the Census taker or especially the people of the house.

Another area to note is that all Catholic Baptismal records in the 1850s and 1860s in the two Ballyhaunis parishes of Bekan and Annagh were open to omissions and mistakes. The Fitzmaurice name in Derrynacong is still the area today. The intriguing record is that of Patrick Fitzmaurice from Derreens. There was no landholder records of that name in Derrens as noted on the Griffiths valuations of 1850s. It is likely that this Patrick Fitzmaurice was a farm labourer living in the village of Derreens and not recorded. It is plausible that he is from Derrynacong and a Married to Mary Bride who is most likely from the Bride families recorded in the north area of Ballyhaunis town in Coolnaha/Annagh districts.

Do you have any old family lore about Regan or Waldron connections. I noted a Michael Regan married to a Mary Fitzmaurice on the 1901/1911 census in Derrynacong. Mary's father was Patrick Fitzmaurice. What lore have you relative to Castlebar Fitzmaurice family. The relationship between a Forthill and Castlebar is interesting. The Fitzmaurice name us still in the Forthill area today. Indeed the Fitzmaurice name is the most commonly recorded name in the old Brackloon School district register books inclusive of the villages of Derrynacong and Forthill.

Shirley, if you have any family lore, old pictures, names of relatives that you cannot connect or anything else please feel free to advise. I know the areas outlined.

On a separate area, there are a collection of books written annually that sometimes include details on family history in the Ballyhaunis district. The book is called the Annagh and is available with issues up to 2012/2013 available free online. As local history publication about the Brackloon area inclusive of Derrynacong and Forthill was produced in 2013. It is still available for sale ONLINE.

Feel free re eto get back to me.

Hi Shay, my problem is that there does not appear to be much known or any family lore at all!  We only know what we do down to the uk census and my brother in law having done some research when he visited Mayo some years ago.  The Forthill issue arises from some records in Dublin he found, it states that one Louisa Carol owed John Fitzmaurice (Grocer, Castlebar) £200 and passed Forthill to him in payment of this debt, I discovered that Walter (Thomas' father in law) was born in Castlebar, his father was named as John, a grocer, I've put 2+2 and thought they may be connected?

I was aware of the two Pat's and the two Mary's but have only been able to find a Thomas baptised to Bride and no Thomas to Waldron?  Even though the dates are slightly out.  We've asked around the family but, unfortunately, all the elders are now gone and no-one seems to know anything.

I will take a look at the publication you mention and another look at the census and neighbours, he was lodging at first and as it was a tight knit Irish community you would think he came here knowing or being related to someone, otherwise why would he come to Blackburn, Lancs specifically?

Thanks again

Shirley

Hello. My Forde ancestors were from Derrynacong. I've accumulated a lot of records of that place and can provide the following

Martin Fitzmaurice of Derrynacong (b.  circa1805) had three sons. John Fitzmaurice Sr. (b. circa 1830) married Mary Greally and lived in Derrynacong, Michael Fiztmaurice married Ann Lyons and lived in Spaddagh, and Pat Fitzmaurice married Eleanor Dwyer and lived in Gorten Beg. John Fitzmaurce Jr.  married Ellie Flatley in 1857 and lived in Derrynacong. They had ten children. (The above information is from Helen Hoban's article in the book on the Brackloon school.)

Pat Fitzmaurice of Derrynacong married Mary Waldron in April 1846. Their daughter married Michael Regan. (A daughter, Catherine, married James Waldron and resided in Derrynacong.)

I had always assumed that the John and Pat Fitzmaurice listed in Griffith's were brothers or related in some way, since they shared rundale (along with Pat Forde and William Quinn), but if Helen Hoban is right that may not be the case. There was a second Pat Fitzmaurce in Derrynacong listed in Griffith's and specified as 'Widow." He's also joined with them in rundale. The second Pat Fitzzmaurice may (or may not) have been married to a lady with the surname Burke.

The National Library of Ireland has all parish registers available on line. They can be viewed as PDFs (and they present a load of problems, since the older records in the Ballyhaunis region do not list townlands). An organization called East Mayo put the entire Bekan and Aghamore parish records on line. They cannot be searched by name, but at least the records are readable. I have a lot of records of Derrynacong if you need anything.

So, I have finally worked out that Patrick Fitzmaurice was married to Mary Bride and was from Derrynacong, he was a labourer so not listed in griffiths valuation.  They had five children, Thomas, Mary, Margaret, Michael and Patrick.  It was this Mary Fitzmaurice who married Michael Regan and continued to live in Derrynacong.  They are on the 1901 census along with her father Patrick.  At some point after 1868 Patrick elevated himself from a labourer to farmer, his wife, Mary, died in 1886.  It would appear all three sons emigrated, Thomas to England, Michael to England and then to the US and Patrick is still whereabouts unknown.  Margaret is also an unknown, so any information on these two would be appreciated.  I would also love to hear from any Regan family, if there are any left in the area.  I have some Regan headstones but no information on where Patrick and Mary are buried.

I believe that Patrick had a brother, Peter, who married Bridget Hopkins and lived at Cherryfields and possibly another brother, John.

The search continues….

hI MY 2X great grandmother was a Margaret Fitzmaurice wei think from the Ballyhaunis area and she married a Duggan who lived in a townland near Claremorris.  Patrick Fitzmauirce appears as a sponsor in one of their children;s baptism.  I have not been able to locate Margaret's marriage record although I think they married around 1844.  I have done a mtdna and would like to connect to other Fitzmauice family.

Thanks in advance
